Ron, it's a little hard to know which you have - it could be a 3PT hitch unit, which goes on the back, or maybe it's a front-mounted one, in which case you probably need to remove the FEL (Front-End Loader) to install it. I suppose it could be a midmount unit also, in which case you'd remove the mower deck and the broom would then mount there. Can you give us more info - maybe post a picture of it ?

dave. the broom is a number 246 front mounted broom. i understand removing the loader. what i really am wondering is where the front pto bracket mounts go? because there are bolts and looks like its a permanent bracket, so does this replace the bracket for the mower draft arms or do i have to always change brackets? ....

Ron, I'm not completely sure about yours - I have a JD4100 with a quick-tach front hitch that handles my rotary broom, a small blade, and my snowblower. But, I also have a neighbor with a JD955, (we trade off - he lets me use his backhoe - what a guy !!!) and one day we were looking at my quick-tach setup and saw that it would also fit on his - apparently the hardware is pretty much the same. I'll tell you how mine goes on, but keep in mind yours might be different. The first thing is to remove your FEL, then remove your mower deck. The mower deck connects to the front of the frame on a bracket. That bracket comes off also. Next you install a different front mounting bracket - this one will have a long drive shaft that connects to the mid-PTO, and the bracket will hang down further than the bracket for the mower. This front mounting bracket is the Quick-Tach hitch bracket - it provides a place for the quick-tach hitch to mount, and it also gives you a front PTO (that's hooked to the mid PTO via that long driveshaft). Next you hang the Quick-tach hitch on the bracket, install it's locking pins, and connect the hyd. lines to the couplers where the FEL was hooked. The Quick-tach hitch has the hyd. cylinders that provide up/down and left/right movement for whatever is hooked on it. Next you then mount the broom on the quick-tach hitch, with a short PTO shaft from the broom to the quick-tach hitch bracket. Now you're ready to use it - turn on your mid-PTO to start the broom rotating, and your joystick (that usually runs the FEL) controls the height and angling of the broom. Now, mine is all quick-clip pins and locks - no tools are required to remove and install. Someone may have bolted your mower front bracket on so they could use the pins elsewhere...in which case you need to remove the bolts and replace them with pins. Once I had done this a time or two, it became very easy to change over - a lot easier and faster than typing it out! I hope this helps - let me know if I can give you any other info. Dave Wells ....

Ron, to try and further answer your questions...on mine, I have to remove the quick-tach hitch and bracket when I put the FEL back on. First, they use the same hyd. connects (although I suppose one could put another SCV on their tractor), and secondly, when I go to lock the FEL on, the FEL locking piece that come's up over the front bar interferes with the quic-tach hitch BRACKET - it's about 1" too close! I considered machining a small portion off of the bracket to allow the FEL lock to clear it, but like I said, after you've done it a time or two it's very easy to change over. In your case, the FEL lock might clear the bracket - BUT, because the Quick-tach hitch bracket connects to the mid-PTO (making it now the front PTO), you wouldn't be able to use the belly mower deck with it on. (I suppose here that one could get a rear 3PT mower...) So yes, you do usually change the brackets when going from a mower & FEL setup to the Front-Broom setup. As I said earlier, your's might have bolts instead of Pins and quick-clip locks. Your tractor may have not been ordered with the option, or someone may have put bolts in because they thought they were never going to remove the front mower deck bracket, etc... Incidentally - the FEL can go on over the "standard" belly mower deck bracket, its just the Quick-tach hitch bracket where my FEL interfers - and yours may not be that way. HTH some more - Dave Wells
