Does anyone know how to adjust the valves on a l500D Yanmar tractor? When the exhaust valves are closed is the intake valve suppose to be open on each cylinder or how does it work?

Julie, even though it is a diesel, the valve clearance is adjusted just like any engine. As you rotate the engine in its normal running direction of rotation, the intake valves are adjusted for maximum clearance when the rocker for the corresponding exhaust valve for that cylinder is just beginning to push the exhaust valve open. The exhaust valve for each cylinder should have its maximum clearance when its corresponding intake valve has just finished closing.
As for the amount of clearance, I do not have the exact number for your engine. But based on experience, I would feel comfortable if it was my own engine and the running clearance was set to be between .006 and .008 inch. ....
