Hi guysThis is a great site.I'm new to the tractor world but am looking to get a compact with loader to do some minifarm chores, including drilling holes for fence posts. A guy has a Yanmar 1500 with loader for $5800 that might do the job. Is there much of a difference going up slightly to 20hp. I've been told 24hp is really needed but no concensus from local dealers. Suggestions?thanks

I'd agree that there seems to be a "step change" in tractor ability somewhere in the mid 20s hp range. The 30 hp tractors are clearly capable doing work in a whole different manner than the under 20 hp machines. It seems more like a difference in weight and leverage than in horsepower. And you don't have to worry that an implement will work with the tractor. Still, don't loose sight of the fact that any of the tractors will get the same work accomplished. The small ones just have to pick at it a bit. They all do it much easier than by hand. And a loader is by far the most important implement.
For small tractors and post hole diggers then you need to make sure that the three point hitch will lift the digger far enough to clear the ground. Some will not. You will also have to move the tractor a few inches forward as the digger goes down because the three point has to move through a larger arc than with a larger tractor. See what I mean by doing the work differently? But it will do the work.

Roger nailed it. I have a JD 750, which is essentially a Yanmar. It's rated at 18-20 horsepower, and I do an INCREDIBLE amount of work with it. Ya just gotta take smaller bites. The only time I run out of tractor is when I'm trying to pull something really heavy. The JD just isn't heavy enough to put all it's power on the ground, and spins the wheels. I do post holes, rotary mowing, backhoe work, tilling, grading, log splitting, wood chipping and moldboard plowing with it, all with no problems. I originally bought it with a front blade for plowing snow, which worked okay, but was COLD! Swapped over to a bucket loader and that, as Roger said, is the single most useful attachment I own. ....
