Does anyone have any experience using a haybine, hay rake, and baler with a compact? I will be taking over the hay on 10 acres of my property. I was just about to purchase a Kubota L3010. I can buy the retiring farmer's hay equipment for a good price. My main concern is with the baler. It is a NH 310 w/kicker. I want to make sure that the tractor has enough power to run the equipment safely. PTO HP requirements are hard to come by on old used hay equipment although he thinks that the baler needs 30 PTO HP. I have seen other balers in the local paper for sale such as JD 14T, JD 24T, NH 65, NH 268. They are all smaller balers but don't know if they have a kicker. My hay is 90% Orchard grass and the land almost flat with a gentle slope.

Richard, I don't know anything about the baler models you named; don't even know whether you are talking about a "square" baler or the big round bales, but I'm guessing the little square bales since you mention 30 PTO hp. I sometimes help a couple of neighbors who are in the hay business. One has 3 John Deeres in the 100-125 hp range, 11' haybines, John Deere round baler, big rake, etc., but he also has to pull some big plows, seed drills, etc. The other has a 9' Gehl haybine and a Gehl round baler. I think the manuals on both say for a minimum of 50 hp, and he uses an old 85 hp Oliver. Rakes usually don't take much power and we even used my B7100 to pull the rake two days when one of his other tractors was broken down. ....

Richard 30 PTO horsepower is what is required to run that baler or any baler that you mentioned. The number on a 9' mower-conditioner is also the same at 30 PTO horsepower. I have seen it done with less but that is what the manufactuer's recommend for operating the equipment that you are looking at. There are no lower horsepower rated machines in the industry that I am aware of at this time to do the job you want to do. ....

I've run a baler from a TC40D and worked fine. The baler did not have a kicker and I recollect that some locals indicated that a kicker would need an additional 12-18 hp over a normal baler requirement. I've driven a MF275 (65hp) running a baler w/kicker and pulling a wagon with 175 bales. That config used all the available hp when on a slope of 1 degree.
