OK, Guys, here is a real quick question. On an early '80's L245DT with 3500 hours, would you recomend using a sythetic oil in the winter for cold weather starts. Tractor is under shed and used for snow plowing in winter. Can be hard to start in cold(below 25') weather. I do not want to start a big debate.Stacey

Youre absolutely on the right track. I use Mobil Delvac 1 5-40 and there is a noticably reduced time for oil pressue to build up over heavier oils. You havent started a debate as far as I am concerned although others dont see the need for the added expense. Where is Mark, I know he will help out on this one.
Happy Tractoring

I'm a Texas boy and I really admire you northern types who are willing to get on a tractor in below 25 deg weather but sitting on one in 105 degrees is no fun either. Any low viscosity natural oil should help as would a $10 engine block heater. You know, the type that magnetically attaches to the pan and plugs in to the mains. I've been told that one of the problems with switching to low viscosity synthetics in older machinery is that it can lead to oil burning and leaks. Don't know how true that is as I've used synthetics in mine since it was new. ....
