I have a 1979 Shibaura -Ford 1500
Started to leak around the right side shifter the other day. Decided I should change the hydraulic fluid and fix the leak. I pulled the transmission drain bolt last night, nothing comes out? I pulled the drain bolt at the lowest point at the rear diff and the fluid drained. It shares transmission and hydraulic fluid. Was surprised when I got up this morning to see there is still a lot of fluid coming out around shifter?? Seems odd as I drained it.
Wondering if there may be fluid locked in the transmission somehow??
Anyone know if there is a transmission vent on this machine that could be plugged?

Hi neighbour!
Since the transmission and differential share a common sump they can share a common vent / breather too.
It's usually high up on the differential to keep it as far away from dirt and moisture as possible.
The fluid will drain for a long time if not good and hot before draining it in cold weather.
BTW, a good trick for finding / checking operation of the vent is to use a rag and air blow gun. Give the most forward drain or fill plug a little puff of air while a helper stands behind the tractor to listen for the vent hissing.
Best of luck. ....

Thanks so much! That makes sense. I have not checked on the diff. I will do that tonight.
Thanks again I appreciate you taking time to respond.
Do you happen to know if the front diff also shares the same oil? ....

Yes, it's standard for a tractor to have a single common sump that is the transmission, differential and the hydraulic fluid reservoir.
The generic fluid used is called THF or TDF. Transmission / Hydaulic Fluid, or Transmission / Differential Fluid. It is lubricant for the trans., the final drives and the wet brakes plus the fluid for the hydraulics, including the 3pth and FEL if it has one, also the hydraulic remotes if so equipped.
Just out of curiosity roughly what part of Ontario are you in?
Best of luck. ....

Thanks again.
I am just S/W of Peterborough about 10-15 minutes.
BTW, for anyone else searching I found the vent for the transmission - it's right in the fill plug. Just a small pin hole , can plug easy when working in the wet snow. ....

Glad you found it, every unit is a little different. They do, BTW, sell replacement units with better breathing capacity. You just need to know the pipe thread size of the port.
FYI, can you hear the Disney Mouskateers singing "It's a small world after all?", I'm barely an hour due west of you. Due south of Lake Simcoe.
I'm at the airport in PTBO on a very regular basis. If you have any other questions just whistle.
Best of luck. ....

Thanks Murf! I may just look at a little better vent system, sounds like a good idea. ....
