I've owned a 4300 CollarShift for about a year. It's been in twice for transmission problems, and starting again. Deere recently offered to supply me with a new tractor, but would charge me a fee per hour on the old one. This is my first tractor and dealings with Deere. Is this normal? Or am I getting the shaft? (Tractor has ~150 hours on it)

Tom it depends on how much they are going to charge you per hour. If it is a reasonable rate I would go for it. You have had use of the tractor for a year. Although I have seen posts here where the dealers traded even. Just be sure you are getting a tractor built this year with the new axle. If it would help have another dealer give you a price on trading in your tractor for a new one. The rent should be much less. Good Luck. Chris ....

I bought a 4200 collar shift last August. I had many problem with it the worst being the transmission. When Deere released the new models with updated axles and Syncshift I traded for one. There is no comparison between the old and new tractors. The new transmission is worlds ahead of the collar shift in ease of shifting. I would highly recommend trading up.

Tom, you aren't thinking about keeping the one that has gone through two and now going for three transmissions already are you?? So that leaves some sort of deal with JD. As far as I know, there are no rules here.... Like horsetrading. First thing I would do is to see what he is offering per hour. If a reasonable lifetime for a tractor is 5,000 hours, then you have used up about three percent of that....So on a 20K tractor that is $600 you owe. Hard to argue with those kind of facts. You seem to be in a good position here. Hope JD comes through for you. They seem to be trying hard to retain customer loyalty. ....

Tom, I traded even on the axle problem with a 4400. My '99 was six months old, with 150 hrs. on it. I don't know what dollar value Deere allowed the dealer for the axle replacement, but that enabled them to sell the old unit to someone who didn't care about the scuffing at a reduced price, and still satisfy me. Chris has a good point about "shopping" a trade, and Roger is right about Deere trying to get out of the mess they got themselves into...maybe another dealer will give you better results. I'm sure, in my case at least, it was the dealer along with Deere who was responsible for the even trade. Good luck. ....

Jack--I tried to do the same thing (swap my flawed 4400 for a newer one) with less than 100 hours and even offered to kick in an extra $1000, but I was told by my dealer that the JD area rep refused to cooperate and JD was not interested, so JD went ahead and put almost $9000 of repairs into my tractor and more repairs are needed. Mike: WOW! It's unbelievable how short sighted some people can be -- I hope Scott takes that to his meeting in Augusta (whoops, I mean Atlanta)! Good luck with the rest of your work -- at least your machine should be like you want it. ....
