I am currently looking into purchasing a new JD 790 tractor...with MFWD..continuous live pto..for mowing/blowing snow and tiller work.Speaking with my friendly John Deere man the other day...and he says...that the 790 series was part of the old John Deere line....to be replaced with the new 4000 series..4100 etc...further..that they aren't "making" them anymore...and that when existing supplies are depleted from dealerships and what evers left in the factory warehouse....that's it..there gone!!!!!!!!JD man says..he has no idea how many are left...or how fast they are going out the door.....but...there may also still be another big push from head office, to clear remaining stock..when?? he couldn't say...so....my question for board members....does anyone out there..have any further solid info on the demise of the 790 line of tractors...any idea how long we will be able to purchase the 790's...and with the options we want????any JOHN DEERE reps. out there reading this,,that can clue us in???I may not purchase till next spring.(2001)..so..I'd sure like to know if I will be able to get one then..!!!Thx,Glen

I don't think so. Talk to another Deere dealer, but I believe the 790 will be around. It's the MST version of the 4000 series, but I think still completely manufactured by Yanmar in Japan vice Augusta, GA where they assemble the component parts, engine, trans, etc. The 990 came out this yr/late last yr and has a larger engine than the 790 and it too has the manual trans. At a lower cost with less problems than the 4000 series it may be around a while. I have a 970 with about 33 hp, bigger, heavier and more $ than the 790, and it has been very dependable. The 790 has been a big seller because of its price. Shop around. There are still some 970s and 1070s on dealer lots, but not many. ....

Glen, sounds to me like you can take what your "friendly John Deere man" has told you and put it in the garden to make the corn grow. There are no dealers here with 790's on the yard, all 790's are ordered in. I was told by my Dealer that he has sold a few since I picked mine up, which took 45 days to get from the order date, and that the time span is about 80 days from order date because the assembly plant is bogged with orders. I was also told that Deere wants to offer a no frills tractor (790 and this years 990) for the market that doesn't need (or can manage to do with out) the bells offered by the 4000's. Further I read that the profit margin is less for the dealers when they sell the 790 and 990, which was mandated by Deere. I am happy with mine, its a solid tractor that has no problem with a 60" tiller or a 72" finishing mower. I think your dealer wants to sell you a 4000 because there is a few more dollars in it for him. Although having said that maybe my dealer is handing out the fertalizer, hopefully someone from JD or a JD dealer will resopnd. ....

Historically, JD has been among the most secretive about their model changes. They have tended to sell their back stock as new, even after they have already obviously changed models....and when they are gone that is it. But that is all past history. I don't know what they are doing now, but if the past is any guide you are going to have a hard time sorting truth from rumors.
One thing is for sure: Those pre-4000 series tractors were good and reliable tractors, although not as ergonomic as the 4000 series. JD tends to keep a good source of parts on hand for just about everything they have ever built. You can get parts for JD equipment built 50 and more years ago. ....

It would be a shame for them to discontinue the 790. It is such a nice basic tractor with enough power and still a nice size at a reasonable price. JD is already limited in the 30hp and under market, it doesn't make sense that they would further limit their selection in that size and hp range unless they are planning on introducing another model or two between the 4100 and the 4300 with more hp than the 4100 and less size than the 4300. ....

Well.....I hope you are all correct....and that they keep cranking out the JD 790's....but..and this has been said before...probably the most correct truth is this......you could talk to 10 different JD dealers and you would probably get 10 different answers....
But if they are any dealers out there that have first hand info...maybe they can share it with the rest of us..... ....
