The way I read the book the air filter is to be changed at 600 hours or annually whichever comes first. That doesn't make sense to me. How can the air filter go bad sitting in the barn with the tractor shut off? I plan to change mine every 2 years which is about 500 hours. Comments?

It makes sense to me. My JD4100 manual says to change the primary air filter as needed per air filter air restriction indicator. It has a pop up device when the air filter is plugged. Or every 500 hours of operation, more often in extremely dirty conditions. The secondary filter is to be replaced after every third primary air filter. I think air filters are one of those things that need replacing when they get too plugged to allow proper air flow or they get so old that the paper element may start to fall apart due to exposure to the elements. This is not an expert opinion by any means. ....

Of course it should be replaced if it is falling apart from age. Do you think that will happen in 2 years? Maybe in 50 years and probably not then. I always keep one of each filter on hand in a storage cabinet. The air filter that I have is now more than a year old. Should I throw it away? Does a dealer throw away air filters on the shelf after a year? Of course not. ....

The factory service reps. from Kubota told me (I asked the same question when I saw them at a trade show) that the filters are impregnated with a substance which makes even very small particles of dirt to stick to them, sort of like the 'sweeping compound' janitors use. After 1 year the compound looses most of it's effectiveness, wrapped up in the plastic bag they last for ever. They did mention that the filter could be removed and bagged when the machine was to be stored for a period of time, however that would be a real pain to do. Best of luck. ....

Very interesting Murf. Maybe I'll reconsider but I'm still skeptical. The filter is surrounded almost completely (obviously not completey) by a tin can. It would seem then that with the tractor off, air flow around the filter would be extremely small. The function of putting it in a plastic bag can only be to reduce air flow around it. ....

You're probably right, but...
Consider what an air filter costs. Then think about what it does, and how much damage a little dust/dirt can do to a diesel engine and injectors. I buy my filters at NAPA, not at the dealer. If I remember correctly, for my John Deere 750, they're about $15. I think of it as cheap insurance to replace it every year. ....

My filter is $50 and I can't get it at NAPA. As far as cheap insurance is concerned: Are you sure that the NAPA filter is as good? By the way, I have a Gravely gasoline tractor with the same recommendation about changing annually. That one doesn't even come in a plastic bag. I change that one much more often because it gets very dirty. Related topic: I have always been told not to use pressurized air on a paper filter. My New Holland manual recommends that I do use it. Why would that be? ....

Dan, using pressurized air is a good way to blow the dust out of an air filter, and I do it frequently; however, a lot of manuals recommend against it simply because if you direct too small a stream of air under too much pressure too close to the filter, you MAY blow a hole in the filter material and then that filter will no longer do its job. ....

$50? Ouch! In my case, with my tractor, yes, the NAPA filter is equivalent to the OEM filter. It doesn't sound as though my theory applies in your case. Generally, it has been my experience that things like OEM filters, oil and other consumable supplies are a huge waste of money. Oil that meets manufacturers ASAE specs is the same, whether it has a John Deere, Dodge or NAPA label on the can. I realize there ARE exceptions to this, but if you shop carefully, you can save considerably. ....
