I purchased 2243 needing engine repair. During engine removal, I discovered drive shaft missing.
Turning the front axle pinion, there is nobody home. I disassembled front axle expecting to find R & P bad. What I found was someone had gutted the front axle assembly when the R & P failed. It is missing the differential carrier, axle shafts, and CV's.
I really wished the seller would have disclosed this. It's a rotten deal.
Does anyone have a lead on a front axle assy? Even a failed front axle assembly might be worth fixing. It's looking like over $3500 for new parts. Is there is a better source of new parts I'm not aware of? While the Ford 1710 is roughly equal, the Ford 1700 front axle looks like a match and the 1710 axle different. I suspect either would work as a complete assembly. Has anyone swapped from one to the other?
My other option is to salvage the tractor. Would the tractor would be worth much as a 2 wheel drive? I have the engine block and crank back from the machinist and am ready to assemble. Maybe the engine is worth more in parts. Any advice on the value of parts would be appreciated. I'm hoping to get out from under this with as little loss as possible.
All I can offer in return for your advice it the name of a couple in Wisconsin that you don't want to buy a tractor from. thanks, Tim 651-429-9012

There's a fair number around even though I've not seen one (except when I was in Shibaura). But the more parts cost and the harder they are to find, the better you can do in salvage mode.
These units spend most of their work-hours in 2WD, especially if there's no front loader and the rears are ballasted and ag tread.
You might ask a lawyer in the seller's jurisdiction if you have a cause of action against them. Regardless, a Small Claims action is easy to file.
So you do have options. ....
