I'm looking to buy a 1978 15HP 2 cylinder yanmar with tiller and small bucket. Condition seems good. Hours unknown. Can anybody tell me what a fair price would be?

The price will depend on several things....If you can find out a little more information we can probably give you a ballpark figure. Get the exact model number. It sounds like a YM155, but it could be something else. Is it 2wd or 4wd? This will make a large difference in the price. By a "bucket" do you mean a loader? Or a 3 point (rear) bucket. Big difference. How many hours on the meter? Does everything work? How are the tires? How is the finish? Do we have any history on it? These are good tractors, very basic and simple. ....

By bucket I mean a front end loader (very small.) I don't have the other info right now. Access to look at the tractor is awkward for me. I'm just looking for a very rough idea so that when I do go back to look at it, I don't seem like an idiot if we discuss price. I know it's worth more than $1000 and less than $10,000. I'm thinking something like $3000. Is that way out of line? ....

I purchased a somewhat earlier YM155D at auction a little over a year ago for $2500. This tractor had some dents but was pretty clean and had under 850 hours. I was told by our local Yanmar parts dealer that it was worth about $3500. This is the four wheel drive tractor but it did not have a loader or tiller with it. I have seen rigs such as you describe listed in our local Northwest agriculturaly oriented classifieds over the past several months for $4995 and $5995. The higher priced one was listed for a number of weeks and I don't know whether either was sold or at what price. The YM1300 is the grey market version of the YM155 and goes for somewhat less than the version "legitimately" imported by Yanmar (earlier grey market tractors generally use four digits where as Yanmar imports used three). The two wheel drive versions generally go for considerably less than the four wheel drive versions, at least around here in the Northwest. Our Northwest prices also appear to be somewhat higher for Yanmars than some other parts of the country, particularly the Southeast. ....

Yep, I know what you mean. And Compact tractor prices were a real sticker shock to me when I first saw them. Two things to remember: One is that compacts lose value at the same rate as any tool until they have lost their initial "newness"...then they tend to stay at the reduced price for years - even decades. Also the used prices do not have the wide variation that one sees in used cars. A tractor that is 10% off of the market price is uncommon. Oh! One more thing: condition doesn't seem to make as much of a difference in the selling price as you would think that it would. I don't know why that this is, because it certainly makes a difference to me. But in general you won't find a large spread in price between one that is very nice and one obviously worn.
I would agree with Casey's prices. The basic 20 year old diesel 15 Hp tractor in two wheel drive with everything working is worth about $2500. But you rarely see them that way. The same model in a 4wd is worth an additional $1000 to $1500. Now we are at $3500 to $4000. At this price you can usually expect to get a well used but still usable implement thrown in. Implements are the "boot" or "deal makers" in a tractor transaction. After all, a tractor without tooling is just a slow way to drive to work.... Here are some rough values: Tillers are expensive new, but $500 to a few hundred more would be normal for one used. They often need repairs on the tiller - they really take a beating. A small lightweight back blade is worth about $150, a box scraper with ripper teeth will bring up to $300, and a rotary mower(brush hog)about $400.
The implement that everyone wants is a front end loader. New ones for that size tractor run at least $2500. A used one will add more than a thousand dollars to the price of the tractor, sometimes up to two. You would prefer an original equipment loader and the YM155 did have a nice one. Hmm...I notice that I'm now at the $5000 to $6000 that Casey mentions. And that is about right.
It's a lot of money. If you email a few pictures to one of us privately, we could probably help you evaluate the tractor.
