Bill, I have a JD 790 and really like it. I looked at the JD 990, but thought it was to much tractor for what I need. The dealer told me the 790 is built on the same frame as the 770. I made a detailed compareison myself and he was correct. The difference seems to be the engine size (30 hp on the 790, about 25? on the 770). I liked the idea that the 770 was a proven design, especially with the problems posted about the 4xxx series. I paid $12,000. for 4wd, dual select hydraulic control valve (for future front end loader), R4 tires with water and antifreeze in all four, and 5 weights up front. I tell you all this because I suspect the same is true of the the 990. Also, I understand that JD does not make a backhoe for the 990, if you were planning on one. John. ....

i have a 970 that i am using for the third year. i like the tractor, works good but there are a few things that detract from its versatility. one is that the split in speeds between ranges is a bit too wide, the other is that being a compact it suffers from lack of traction without proper tires. traction can be improved with ballast or wider tires. i mow so i opted for the wider tires. i went aftermarket with 19.5L x 24 firestone turf and field, seems to be the ticket. the 990 is a 970 with more hp. although i have seldon been short of power. i run a 7 foot finishing mower in 4 th gear and it works like a charm. before that i ran a 5 foot brush cutter without any power shortage or problems.
if you do loader work shifting can become a chore.

I am going to take delivery on the JD 990 4wd Monday evening.I will let you know how it works out.I have let my brush hogging go due to a broken brush hog.It should be a good test for the 990 and the 613 cutter. Thanks for the replys. Bill ....
