JD 4200 Smoking Hydrolics

Smoke started coming out of the plastic hydralic filler spout on the rear of my 4200 today as I was using a PTO post hole digger. I was not using it very long or hard. I think the problem was that the tractor was situated facing down hill, thus the rear end with the hydrolic resivoir was elevated. Maybe insufficient oil to the gears? I shut off the PTO immediatly after I saw the smoke. I then turned the PTO on again and it would spin the auger, but would stop spinning with the slightest dirt resistance. So I stopped completely. Any harm done? My theory correct? Any advice? Need to change hydrolic fluid? thanks for the help Todd

sounds like you may have damaged your pto clutches, I'd see if there is an adjustment on them. Isn't a 4200 a little lite for a post hole digger? ....

Thanks Chuck. The post hole digger needs very little torque/power/speed because it gears down the direct PTO speed into a few RPM's on the Auger. Much less than a shredder/bush hog or a rear mower. The Auger operates at idle speed and isnot recommended for higher engine RPM's.

Todd, it sounds VERY much like Chuck hit it on the head. My money would also be on the pto clutches being toasted, there is no way that the bearings would generate that kind of heat even if the oil level was very low. The clutches slipping would do this in seconds, the easy? way to tell would be to agitate the hyd. fluid a little (high revs. in neutral for a few seconds) then drain a quart or two of fluid into a CLEAN container, if the bearings were the culprit, the fluid will be almost normal. If it was the clutches the fluid will smell burnt, and will be disclored, and probably contain some sediment (burnt friction lining from the clutch disc). Otherwise put something like a Bush-hog on the back and engage the pto at idle, then suddenly increase the rpm's, if the clutches are bad it will spin free instead of loading the engine till it gets up to speed. Best of luck. ....
