I am having to choose between the above tractors: JD 850 4WD vs 1050 2WD. Both are available and in excellent (restored) condtion. Both have loaders. The 850 is $12K and the 1050 is $11K. I am a first time owner. I have 24 acres but only need to mow 4-5 of these. I also need it for loader work/landscaping, and for post hole drilling (augering). I don't want to buy too little or too much tractor. I am leaning toward the 1050 because it's $1,000 less and it's 10 more HP, but I'm not sure of the tradeoff. Can anyone help? By the way, my land has some modest hills but nothing very steep (at least not the part that I will do anything with). Thanks in advance.Rich

I have a 970 with FWD and 430 LDR. You may regret getting 2WD if you plan to use the loader a lot, because you won't be able to dig in as well w/o it. You will probably need the FWD more than the extra HP. My opinion. Nothing wrong with either 850 or 1050 and less "problems" than 4000 series. Frank ....

Frank,
Thanks for the advice. The more I talk to people, the more the "necessity" of 4WD becomes apparent.

You might also want to checkout a new 790 with loader. Probably a bit more than the used 850 but with 30 HP, 4WD and a 2 year warranty. Just a thought... ....

Ditto Steve, When I saw the price differ. in a new vs 4 year old I went for new with warranty, with all MY hours and all MY use. I couldn't live w/o the 4wd on my B2710 for loader work. Good luck. ....

Is there any specific specification questions that you have on the 850 vs the 1050? I have some of the old JD literature that covers both of these tractors..
I'd have to look at it to double check the difference in tractor weight, but in general you want 4wd with a compact tractor. Both of these tractors offered the power steering as an optional extra. It is still available, and costs right over $1000. Also, as I remember, that 1050 was a turbo! And they sure are nice smooth running engines when they are turboed. Lots of farm tractors have been running moderate boost turbos since the 1960s. Unlike some cars, turbo tractors are very reliable. ....
