I have had my 4300 (4WD)for about 9 months and yesterday I got stuck. It was a simple case of have no traction on one front tire and one back tire. It was my understanding that the rear diff. was lockable. Mine did not lock up. I tried several times including holding it down. (it did stay down when engageduntil I pulled forward to get a different angle, then it would snap up)It was clear when this was engaged that only one back tire was spinning. Does anyone have any experiences with the lock feature on the 4000 series. Your comments would be appreciated.J.D. Braathen

My 4300 was delivered July 1999. Diff. Lock works fine. I move the heal of my left foot and hold the lever down. It only stays locked with pressure on.
This is only locking the rear.

Have you ever been in a situation when one of your wheels was freely turning (ie you were really stuck before you engaged the lock.

Paul, It sounds like your differential is working correctly but I'm no expert. If one rear tire is spinning and you step on the lock diff lever and then let go, as soon as you gain traction the lock releases. When I'm in a real greasy situation some times I hold the lever down for 5 or 10 seconds. Until I'm clear of the problem and have some headway speed. I have ag tires though and if you have turfs, It's possible that even this approach won't help. If you were trying to corner during the maneuver results of course would probably be unfavorable as well. ....

Your differential lock is working right. When you are using it, you need to KEEP pressure on the lock peddle. When it is let up and the same amount of traction is once again returned to both wheels, the peddle will release. Don't let up on the peddle until you are unstuck. JerryG ....

That sounds like it is working correctly. I have a JD and a Kubota. The differential only locks when it is held down and releases when you release it. Sometimes you have to wait a few seconds for it to engage but you should feel it drop easily when it does. Also, the Kubota manual specifically states you should never turn when it is locked. ....
