Several months ago I posted several messages regarding the excessive smoke my JD4100 made on start up. Grey smoke filled the barn and smelled of raw diesel expecially on cold days. After a short warm up the problem went away. I called the dealer and the tractor was picked up the next day for warranty service. After setting in the dealer's lot for two weeks they finally looked at it. It was decided that all three injectors were bad. The injectors were re-built and re-installed. The tractor was then returned during warm weather. The smoke problem seemed to disappear but the idle was very rough. I decided to live with the problem rather than deal with an arrogant and discourteous dealer. The weather has now turned colder and the problem is back though not as bad as it was. JD customer service satisfaction sent me a service satisfaction survey today. Needless to say they did not receive high marks. The point of this now lengthy message is to note that one slipshod dealer does not make an entire brand of tractor undesirable. It will be interesting to see if I receive a response from JD customer service satisfation and if the problem is ever resolved to my satisfaction.

Larry - I received, & filled out the survey with the scuffing problem noted (courtesy of this board) -- two weeks later, the dealer called me, and informed me he would discuss the problem with the factory rep. (I thought I'd probably be ignored - like the treatment the auto industry usually gives!) The short of the story is I'm getting a new tractor! So, I'd say John Deere DOES pay attention to the surveys, and frankly I'm so sold on the company, as well as my dealership, I won't even think of going anywhere else -- keep the faith!!!

Jack, you're on target about handling the complaint. I have been on the scuff boards about my JD4400. At first I thought complaints were not significant, however upon more inquiry and using the tractor I noted the problems. You know there's more. One has to handle an inquiry or complaint in the appropriate manner. I then started getting information. Spoke to an engineer at Dana and also investigated the new front end first hand. I approached my dealer with an inquiry type complaint and I'm getting results. He said the factory is sending the upgrade. I'm proud of my dealer as he does take these inquiries serious and so does John Deere. ....

Chuck, I suspect I did handle my complaint in "the appropriate manner". Walk a mile in my shoes. Or better yet, walk a mile with my dealer. At least it appears that JD is listening. ....
