A local equipment dealer has been selling grey market tractors for several years here locally. He has for sale two tractors I am interested in but I think the price is a little high. Can anyone offer some advice to a newcomer? the models he has for sale are as follows: YM 1500D for $3995 and a YM 1610D for $5250. These tractors seem to be in good shape but this fellow just seems a little different...for example if you buy a Yanmar tractor from him he will sell you parts for it, but if not from him you're on your own, he won't help.Thanks in advance JON

I wouldn't care if the guy has the best prices on the planet! Why would anyone deal with such a petty control freak? There are many good dealers out there with good prices AND service. It's your money. I suggest that you and your money take a walk from that dealer. ....

Comeon, Johnathan....you've got to be pulling our legs...There couldn't really be such a perfect example of "the dealer to avoid"..Could there? Although if he really exists, you are one lucky guy to have a dealer like that nearby. Lots of guys go through lots of head-scratching trying to figure out if their local dealer has reasonable ethical standards or is just a self-inflated gasbag. The only problem that I can see is that compared to this joker even a bad dealer is going to look good!!

Thanks for the replies fellows. That pretty much tells me about the dealer but what about the tractors? Is that size ok for a five acre spread? LARGE garden and pasture to care for, ect. and what about price for these tractors? This, for me, will be a major investment and I'd rather not be sorry later on :(

First of all is he a true Yanmar parts & service dealer. Some people call themselves Yanmar dealers because they sell used Yanmar tractors. Yanmar dealers are not required to supply parts for grey market tractors.They are required to supply parts for US models. I can understand the reasons for this. Yanmar doesn't directly support the grey market tractors with information or parts books. If a dealer supplies parts for greys, he's, kind of,on his own. I know some dealers aren't interested in supplying parts for tractors they haven't sold for a couple reasons. 1. Many purchasers are first time tractor owners, who need alot of free information. 2. It seems alot of people are price shopping. It takes time to look up part #s (which many times have changed to aanother #) & prices. And then no parts are purchased. I've spent up to 1-1/2hours looking up small parts & not selling anything.(If you want to be a parts price shopper, get a parts book. It's not right to have 3 dealers wasting time looking up parts that they aren't going to sell. In the long run it will cost everyone in higher prices.) I feel, if I'm in this business,this is part of doing business & I'll treat everyone the same. Supply information & looking up parts is part of doing business, but it takes time & time is money. (personal note: 99% of my parts business is for tractors I didn't sell. High quality tractors need fewer parts.) ....

I'd recommend the ym1610d. It has a water pump, powershift transmission, & is newer. I'm not big on pricing tractors I haven't seen. Consider quality of the tractor, will dealer repair the tractor if it breaks down 3 years from now, & will he supply parts. Prices also vary by region. The price is reasonable for my area. ....

These prices are a bit high for my region of the country (south-central). Typical price for the 1500D here is about $3100 and for the 1610D about $3800. I recently purchased a 2310D for $4800, which is a typical price for this area. ....

I would keep shopping for the Yanmars elsewhere since the dealers parts policy stinks; I wouldn't have much faith that he would be offering me a good deal on any tractor. I see more and more grey market Yanmars on many back roads now so with some effort you should find other sources. Ask around, I bet you find several within 100 miles. ....

Hello Marty. I am new to the board and noticed your post about prices in your area. They sure are good prices. I have been given a price of $4950 for a YM1601D in my area of Tidewater, Virginia. I wonder if I could do better by dealing with whomever it was you dealed with and just pay for shipping. I may come out better in the long run. The dealership you dealt with, do they have a web page or email address by any chance? Any help would be appreciated because I would really like to get the best deal possible for my money.

Yes, I think that tractor prices here are a bit cheaper than other parts of the country. Checking this morning's paper, I see a 30 hp Kubota, 4WD, 488 hours, $5,500, that's a good price. I bought my tractor from Manning Enterprises in Franklinton, Louisiana. They do not have a website or even email to my knowledge. You can get their number here http://www.theadvocate.com/classifieds/
just search under merchandise and farm equipment, they have an add for yanmars starting at $2,600. I checked with them to see what they have in stock, no 4WDs right now, but they do have a YM1700 ($3200), YM1900 ($3200), YM1500 ($2600), all low hours. I purchased a YM 2310D from them in August ($4800) and have been extremely pleased with it, hope this helps. ....
