L2550 four wheel drive

My FWD has gone south on my L2550,maybe someone with some expertise can answer a question on this for me: The lever engagement works fine,after removing the driveshaft cover I find that the driveshaft spins freely when out of FWD, when engaged the drivshaft does not turn, does this mean the problem is somewhere in the front axle drive. Would elevating the rear wheels and engaging the FWD (rear wheels spinning) and observing the driveshaft indicate anything? Thanks
