Retrofitting remote hydraulics

I have an early (1979) JD 850 tractor which does not have a selective control valve (remote hydraulics). I'd like to retrofit this to my tractor. The dealer sells a complete retrofit kit for $1200 (gag!). Being a mechanical engineer, it seems that there must be a cheaper way to do this. I have a JD service manual which describes the function of the SCV in some detail. On my early 850, there is a junction block in the hydraulic pressure line to the rockshaft which is currently blocked off. The factory SCV kit taps into this junction block to get pressure to the SCV. When the SCV is not being used, oil bypasses the valve and flows to the rockshaft. It would seem that I can duplicate this function with aftermarket hydraulic valves that I've seen at Tractor Supply, Central Tractor, etc. These cost about $100 apiece. With fabricated brackets, hoses, couplers, I should still be able to get out of it for a lot less than $1200. Has anyone done this? Conversely, is there a source for an aftermarket remote hydraulic setup? How about a JD 850 being parted out (which still would have the SCV)? Thanks for your help.
