There has to be several million miles of automotive experience here so I'll throw our a front drive automotive question:
Has anyone ever had a half shaft on the front of a fwd car come loose from the drive flange on the transmission? I was expecting to have to replace a worn out (300k miles) CV joint on the front of my '86 VW, but found the drive flange had just came loose instead. The problem was an intermittent vibration and feedback through the steering. I've never seen such a thing. Both shafts are fine, only the driver's side was loose (I had replaced the pass side shaft and joints a couple of years ago).

I've not had a flange come loose, but I must say I was mightily impressed with how beefy the CV joints and front wheel bearings are on VWs. At least they were beefy on my 78. Not surprising you have 300k miles on them. Now if they could just fix the electrical glitches. ....

worked on a few vw's really never had that issue be for. I will say they were the reason and only reason I had to buy
(triple square drive) 12 pt bits and sockets, I also dont like the plastic fuel line (thing) oh and the issue of having the air box together (air flow meter) before it will run right
but I will say that 200,000 is common ....

I have never seen a VW Half shaft come loose. I have gone through about 10 12pt torx style bits because I could not get them loose. ....

12 point torx... Yeah, gotta love 'em. I've had to "resharpen" mine several times too, LOL. I too noticed that the shafts and joints are larger than on the Chevy half ton plow truck I have.
Thanks for the experience notes. Car *seems* to be okay again now, so I'll give the Mrs her car back and put the truck away again, sigh. I was beginning to get used to a car with cruise, a/c, comfy seats, and... ....
