So a guy leaves his older Yanmar with a FEL at my home, helping me do some backfilling on a retaining wall project. He said, "go ahead and use it, just have to use a screwdriver to start it." I decide to try moving some brush in a big burn pile, and on the second scoop, the right front wheel broke completely off!! The hub seemed to shear off in a designed sort of way, but I couldn't believe how easy it is to shear this. The owner assured me that he has done this twice before, and a machine shop normally fixes the old hub, rather than ordering a new one. I hope my Boomer isn't built this cheap...

I have certainly pounded up my Deeres and the front ends were certainly strong. Was this a 2 wheel drive unit?

Is the axel breaking off at the spindle connection? If this is the case the material is harded steel or iron and extremely difficult to weld correctly.

It is a 4wd unit. The owner said I was probably trying to push to hard, and the hub, which has no shear pin or anything, just spun off. He has had them fixed before, and has to have part of the hub ground out to fill in, and they tap it and put a bolt in, and weld around it as well. The hub and spindle are essentially one unit on these? I'm going to put a FEL on my tractor, and didn't know if anyone else had problems like this...maybe I don't want a FEL on my tractor if it will put undue strain on it? ....

It is not very common to break 4wd axles even if overloaded. Have experience with Yanmar tractors for over 30 yrs, and have only seen twice before. What model is it?? ....

The JD 750 I had tore up on side of the axel but I don't know what happened as it was the first owner. I only know that the new parts were expensive and this was one of the reasons he decided to sell it.
The expense may be the reason he has repaired it rather than purchasing a new unit. I suspect it would be difficult to repair. Likely Yanmar does the initial welding hot before they machine the spindle. ....
