Last Friday morning our SCADA system indicated alarms at one of our industrial substations. A crew was send to investigate.

They found a red tail hawk laying on the primary conductor with part of a black snake held in one of its talons. Apparently the snake was giving the hawk problems which resulted in the snake wrapping its self around two primary phases creating the outage. We think the snake was approximately 6 feet long. The voltage on this circuit is 13.2KV. Check out my picture number 12.

Outages created by birds and squirrels are common, but this is the first time any of us had seen this situation.

It's not a real common sight, but probably a half dozen times I've saw a hawk take off with a snake in it's grasp. This spring I had several red tail hawks watch over me as I tilled ahead of the corn planter, they would pick up a mouse on a pretty regular basis. If we only had eyesight like them. Frank. ....

My wife does every time I drop a crumb on her kitchen floor. She can see a water spot on the crome of the faucet at 50 yards (While walking away!) In the dark!!!! ....
