(sorry if this appeared twice, I had an interrupt so tried again)Having just recieved my new, old, Yanmar 186D I am interested in keeping it. So my question is, how do others keep theirs secure? Are there any crucial, easily removable parts that make it very difficult for someone to make off with it? I also have chain and a padlock, but chaining the wheel is just a nut away from being able to steer it. And chaining to a tree - well parts can be taken off to free the chain (like a wheel) and the tree can be cut. I am not here all the time to watch it and would appreciate your innovative ideas for securing it. Thanks

The best thing you can do is protect it from theft, vandalism and the elements by getting it out of sight and the weather and into a locked shed. Rain & sun will steal you blind, too. ....

I'll second Rick's comments. They can't steal what they can't see. Most Theives are basically lazy and will move on to an easier mark if you make their job difficult. Out of sight out of mind is the easy solution. Removing the negative battery lead and turning off the fuel at the petcock on the filter are effective as the will slow down a thief and they don't want to hang around to figure out whats wrong. With the fuel shut off the tractor may run for 30 - 60 seconds but thats it. ....

The potential thief will more than likely not drive it off or on to a truck, they will drag it onto a roll deck truck.Insurance is the best way to protect it.A large dog is also a great deterent.Storing it indoors is a good way to get it out of sight, slow down a theif, and protect it from the weatherMy $.02 worthGood Luck! ....

Thank you for all the comments. I am checking my insurance and acclerating my plans for a secure shed/garage/barn (whatever the negotiations witht he wife allow). Meanwhile it is under cover and chained to another car. They will have to cut a heavy chain or remove several parts to get it. ....

Smith & Wesson if you catch them and State Farm if you don't. My Kubota stays locked in the garage when not in use (This also keeps the daughter and neighbors kids from playing on it.) It is covered under my homeowners policy. If it gets gone I'll just let State Farm buy me a new one:)Jeff in NC ....

Best parts to take off, is parts of the theif when he tries to steal the tractor. Not innovative concept, but works 99.9% of the time.OR maybe you could hook up tractor to 220v. You'll have to pry his hand off the tractor when You go out to check on it. ....
