You missed a one. There is a class '0' also.

It is purely a size issue. The lift arms are longer and spread wider as the numbers go up. There is also more space between the lift arms and the top link as the numbers increase.

And.... of course.... the power of the hitch increases tremendously as the numbers rise. ....

Tractorsmart has some info on these. Click on this link, Click on Info, Click on 3-point types and part way down the page there is a table showing dimensions of the various categories. The dimensions are mostly standardized but some products vary a bit. ....

"Class" ratings generally refer to vehicle tow hitches. 3-pt hitches are generally "Category" ratings.

Are you asking about tow hitches or 3-pt hitches? We may be answering the wrong question. ....

The hitches start off at O which is basically for larger size garden tractors like the 400 series deere and the super series on the cadets as well as the other large frame garden tractors. Catagory O-1 is on the sub compact tractors, it uses the width on the pins the same as the O and about the same lift but uses Cat 1 pins. Cat 1 is the next step up and is used to about 50 horsepower. Cat 1-2 is used on 40 to 75 horsepower tractors. Cat 2 goes up to about 130 horsepower. They gain in pin spread and diameter as they get large and they go all the way up to cat 4 with variations of all sizes. ....
