This weekend I tried to start my JD 4400. Outside temp was about 50 degrees. I hit the heater for about 10 seconds. It turned over VERY slowly for about a second and then kind of chattered. I released it and tried again. Same thing. Charged the battery but it was not discharged. Then it started. Any thoughts anyone?

Sounds like a bad battery or a bad connection. by the way I have never had to use the pre heater to start my 4400. Last winter it started fine when it was in the single didgets without it. Chris ....

Like Chris says, it sounds like battery or connections. If you are sure the battery is good then loosen, clean, and retighten everyone of the heavy battery cable connections.....starting with the cables to the battery terminals and ground lead and proceeding toward the solenoid and thence to the starter itself or until the starter turns over full speed. If this doesn't work, then the next thing is the solenoid itself and then the starter. Frankly, it is usually either the battery or the connectors right at the battery. Don't believe that the connectors are good until you have cleaned them yourself. Don't believe that the battery is good until you have either swapped it out or jumped the tractor with a known good automotive 12 volt and it still doesn't crank. ....

Yes, I have to do the battery cleaning chore this week when I bring the tractor back from our camp. As a reminder to myself, I'll note that a ground cable has two ends, and both are subject to corrosion. ....

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I cleaned all the cables and still had the problem. I jumped the battery and it started normally so I replaced the battery and it starts fine. The battery was only 16 months old so I didn't think it was the problem but it was. My automatic battery charger indicated it was fully charged but clearly it wasn't or something else was happening during the starting load. ....
