I went looking for a rock rake today. The dealer had a used 6 ft ARPS rake in back, a little rusty, no guage wheels, but it looked solid. He was asking $350. Is ARPS equipment a good value, dependable? What about the price? I thought it sounded a little high for an older rake, even if it was in useable condition. Thanks in advance for your help. JonB

I've not heard of ARPS but the price seems a bit high... unless it's a really heavy, top line model like Land Pride etc. I almost bought a brand new King Kutter (not top line) 6' rake last fall at Quality Farm for $319 on sale. If you have a Quality Farm or TSC nearby, take a look at the models they sell and compare material thicknesses and overall weight. Heavy is usually better. ....

I agree with Rob that heavier is usually better - particularly on 3pt implements. I only know of ARPS from the loaders that they built in the 70s and 80s. They were one of the companies that made the "factory" loaders for some the imported compacts of the time. These were very good loaders. They were high quality, and ARPS was one of the first to use high strength steel and geometry to get strength without adding too much weight. I don't know about their 3pt implements, but the rake it is probably worth a second look.
I made a toolbar type rock rake on my tractor. It didn't work well for me because it was too sensitive to the pitch of the tractor, alternately digging in too much and then lifting too much. Also, it picked up so much weeds and sticks that it kept fouling the tines. Maybe if it had angled more and had a set of gauge wheels it would have worked better. If I tried it again I would make it more of a towed implement than a 3pt type implement. I'd still make it attach to the 3pt hitch, but with lots of weight to keep it down, and work it in the "float" 3 pt position - setting the ground engagement by means of the gauge wheel height. ....

I had an Arps (National Loader) on my Satoh S650G, excellent quality. I didn't know they were still in business. I have two rakes, both Leinbach, 7 & 8' with gauge wheels, new $450/$500 w/o wheels. (wheels about $180.) We have York and Modern(same) in our area and the quality is equal if not better. Get some other quotes and look around so you have a "reference". ....

I agree! I am a dealer in Connecticut and I love selling those Leinbach rakes. They are inexpensive and built better than most of the name brand rakes. ....
