Not enough is better than to much, in this case. I've been cutting driveshafts on my new attachments to fit my new JD4700. Well I've only had to do it to two attachments, the Fransgard V4000 logging winch and the Patu 65 HF chipper. How does one measure once, cut once and have it fit. I usually have been guess-ta-mating, cutting, trying, guess-ta-mating, cutting, fitting. Please help ooh wise-ones. David

The manual that I got with my Befco tiller gives a straight forward method for cutting the drive shaft to the right length. Basically you want it to be 2" shorter than the shortest collapased length. If you want I can scan the manual and email it to you. Cutting the drive shaft was not easy for me. It was made of hardened steel. ....

Try this simple method, measure from lock-ring (the groove in the pto shaft that the pin catches) to lock-ring (or hole in some cases) then as was previously mentioned, cut the shaft to be 2-4" shorter (2" may not leave enough play to easily put the pto shaft on & off) than this distance. The easy way to mark the locations on both halves is to seperate them and lay them side-by-side, ends correct distance apart then just make a line with spray-paint across the middle, cut through and re-assemble. Best of luck. ....

Thats the same thing that I do, Murph`....lay them side by side with the 3 point in different positions. I also prefer more end clearance than Larry's Befco tiller wants. Just measured my bush hog and it has 20" of potential engagement and the drive shaft actually engages about 14" .....You want to err on the side of excessive end play to give yourself room to adjust the top link. ....
