1983 New Holland 4 WD does not engage

I have a 1983 Ford/New Holland 4 WD tractor, the transmission is not making a grinding sound but now when pull up to engage the 4 WD lever it will not engage. Has anyone had a problem with the slide lever under the cap where the handle is located?What other problem should I look for?

I had that problem and found the linkage had come loose on the shaft coming out of the transmission housing. Also, I believe that the manual says to stop the tractor before trying to engage the FWD. ....
