Was running OK. It was hard to restart and finally did, got it back to the shop and tried to start in a week. It turned over but won't start. Got a tractor mechanic to look at it, changed the fuel filter and was certain the injector pump had failed. Got it back from the diesel repair shop. No parts were replaced on the pump ($$$) and one injector was rebuilt. Mechanic got it all put back together. Lots of air in the system. After several attempts finally it started with hefty shots of starting fluid into the air intake. Ran it for just a short while since lower radiator hose wasn't yet connected. Tried to start again after lower hose was re-connected and would not start again. Ran out of ether and called it a day!

Time to call another mechanic.
Some of them had an electric fuel pump, others have a hand primer. Both need to pull fuel through the water separator. If that's not assembled correctly it can create air leaks making for hard starting, run and die, run and die, lots of bleeding, all that. That system wasn't one of "Ford's better ideas", and if the tractor has the auxiliary fuel tank it's even worse. You need to establish that there is air free fuel supplied to the injection pump. I suspect you don't have that yet. ....

HAha. This one has the primer bulb above the fuel filter. It looks like the water seperator & the filter are plumbed correctly.
The latest breakthrough is that the fuel shut off relay was replaced and now when it cranks it will fire but not run. Whereas before it would just crank & crank- no puff of white smoke. I did try another fuel solenoid, but no change. Hand primed it and then bled it per owners manual instructions. Primed bulb again and won't run. Tractor only has about 3700 hours. It's mostly a weekend warrior if that.
Thanks! ....

Also no aux. tank and it was suggested that maybe I could add the electric pump but not sure about that. ....

Also the tractor will start and run if the plenum of injector pump solenoid in taken out. But wouldn't really want to run it around that way cause the key won't shut it off! ....

If I have this right -- it will start and run with the plunger out of the shutoff solenoid? You have swapped solenoids with no improvement? If that's the case, then I see one of two possibilities. A) you have two defective solenoids. B) you have no power to the solenoid when the starter is engaged. I have seen that before on S model tractors. You may need to do some creative wiring. ....

Correction-the injector was gone through completely, but no components were significantly bad.
Anyway, so got everything back together and tractor still won't run- cranks OK. Still about 9.5 volts at the fuel shut off solenoid. Replaced the starter ignition switch from the Dealer & the fuel shut off Relay from O'reiley's. Checked and cleaned electrical connections with antioxidant/cleaner spray. Wiring and harness look ok & no signs of mice eating away any insulation. Did find where on the fuse box there was one fuse contact that seemed to have broken off at some point so reinforced with backing tape to keep it pushed in. Also replaced fuses that were not the correct amperage. Had downloaded a service manual (at a good price < $30). Also, to note electrical schematics were not dead on compared to the way the fuse box was wired and some wire color coding wasn't accurate as well. Gave the primer a couple pumps, started just fine on the first lick!! I love a happy ending. haha

So you were fighting a fuel problem that didn't exist. It was electrical all along.
As for wiring diagrams not being exact, tractors produced over a number of model years don't always match the same diagrams. S models were assembled in Mexico, and wiring inconsistencies are not uncommon. ....

Yes an electrical problem that affected fuel delivery. I like to think the injector pump and one of the injectors that got rebuilt improved the performance a little especially since it starts so well now. ($$). The tech I hired was hell bent on it being the inj. pump! Once he got a glimmer of hope when it was sputtering real good due to the ether he was spraying- oh my gosh the smoke!! That guy was a trip! But yea definitely electrical. I have a kit for the leaky fuel separator which is the next lit’l fun project.
Thanks for your input, it definitely sounds like you’ve had a Ford new holland a time or 2. It’s a dying breed around here as the main dealer locally is heavy into the orange Kabota’s now! ....

Actually never owned one, but spent some years at a New Holland dealership. I got to know the Ford line pretty well. ....
