I have had a 2001 MF4253 4X4 (with a 12 X 12 speed transmission with manual clutch and shuttle shift) for approx 3 years (with 2500 total hrs.) and it has worked fine. I noticed the past few times I used it that it was getting sluggish to move when the clutch was disengaged...and now it will not move at all, in either direction, in any gear combination. Can any of you offer any suggestions as to what the cause might be and/or how to identify it/possible solutions? I just bought a complete service manual but it does not include any diagnosis sections. Thanks.

Have you noticed the odor of a clutch burning? A badly slipping clutch will smell somewhat like hot brakes depending on the type of clutch lining.
Have you checked the clutch pedal freeplay? That measurment should be in your owners manual and surely in the service manual. If you caught it in time an adjustment might save the day.

Hi Frank. Thanks for your comments.
I haven't smelled any clutch burning...as it is a fully cabbed tractor...(and I haven't noticed any slippage in any gear range. But, I will check the clutch free-play compared to OEM service manual specs. Hopefully, it needs adjusting...and that solves the problem.
Thanks again

whooper, no idea the design of the linkage there but have you looked carefully for bent linkage or the rod into the transmission and also for broken roll pin or loose set screw that could have been working loose and finally has? Also spring on the linkage or trash interfering with it's return to position. kt ....

Hi Guys.
Happy New Year all. My apologies for not replying earlier.
It turned out, after-all, that the clutch was shot. I had a mechanic do some diagnostics and he thought, based on the symptoms, that there might be a problem with the synchro shift linkage...but we looked at that and all was fine. There were no visible problems within the transmission itself (after removing its cover and manually shifting it...).
Once a new clutch was installed, all worked normally and has ever since.
Thanks again for your suggested solutions.
