Found a big pool of trans oil under my BX 1500 with an approx 1.5 in plastic cap that appears to have come off tranny just in front of left axle. Appears to be held in by friction. Can't find it separately in parts catalog. First what is it, how is it secured, and what would make it come out.

The cap you found is the fill cap for the front axle transmission oil.
It is held in by a simple o-ring and is friction fit. It can be a bugger to get off. It's a tight fit.
Two things I can think of could cause it to blow off.
1. Your tractor may be equipped with bi-speed turn. If continually engaged, this could cause the oil to get hot.
2.You may have used the tractor for a long period in 4x4 when you didn't intend to.
3. In either case, the reason it popped off was likely due to heat expansion, and a plugged vent tube.
You will find a vent tube coming from the front axle. It is probably a rubber hose that points upward under the frame of the tractor, where it then makes a u-turn and points down. It's possible that the vent tube is plugged, or has been removed and plugged at the axle.
I can get you a part number for a new cap if you need it.

Joel, thanks for the reply. The plastic is from the tranny, not the front axle. It appears to go in somewhat like a freeze plug on an engine--and appears to go in the same. It's on the tranny just in front of the left rear axle. The schematic for the tranny shows it, but doesn't list it separately. I've cleaned the tranny vent; nothing unusual. Still not sure how it is held in other than sealant or what would have made it pop out. Appears I was lucky that it came out in the garage. Thanks. ....

Sorry about that. I thought you were referring to the front axle in your first post.
The cap you are referring to is the transmission fill plug. It is located directly behind the operator's seat.....top left of the transmission.
Your fill level dip stick is located on the lower right side of the operator's seat, right behind your right foot.
The fill cap is also held in place with an O-ring, and is a very tight fit. You'll also see a vent tube on the top of the rear transmission housing. It's a little metal tube, bent into the shape of a upside down U.
I can't imagine why that plug would have blown off, unless you may have overfilled the transmission? Another possibility could be the use of improper hydraulic fluids.
Was the tractor running at the time?

Regret not be clear Joel. It's not the fill cap--that is OK. Vent is OK as well. I use Kubota Super UDT. The blue plastic "cap" goes into a round cavity on the lower side of the transmission case, just in front of the left rear axle. As stated earlier, it seems to function like an engine freeze plug. There are no threads. The schematic shows it to go smooth side in. When it came out, trans fluid drained out. ....

Just talked to Kubota service manager. $4 plastic plug held in by sealant. Apparently, will pop out if tranny vent becomes plugged and pressure builds in trans. ....
