Scott, put the range selector into neutral then back into whatever range you like and try it again.
It sounds like it's not quite fully in gear.
Best of luck. ....

Murf,
Is that the one below my seat on the right that has the rabbit, N and Turtle...sorry to sound so new at this but I am.
I tried that last night and it was hard to do but I got some relief and then it wouldnt work again. Could that be the problem, not sure why all of a sudden it started doing it ....

You are right, on both counts, by the sounds of it.
If it is stiff and hard to move it sounds like the problem, the shifter is not putting it FULLY into gear, as it backs off on it's way to popping out of gear it WILL make some noises.
I would try working that lever a little, they are usually pretty stiff when new but do loosen up as they get used and 'broken in' a bit.
If your machine is new (or really close to it) I would give your dealer a call, there may be some adjustment on your machine that will help the situation.
Best of luck. ....

It sounds like the bolt that secures the drive gear onto the hydro motor is broken. It allows the gear to slide off, especially in reverse. Chances are, a 50 cent bolt is causing your problem. The problem is, the labor involved with fixing it is time consuming. The worst part is finding the broken bolt and washer to be sure they aren't floating around in the transmission to cause more damage later. The hydro will need to be removed to replace the bolt. If you are lucky, the broken bolt and washer can be fished out of the tranny with a flexible magnet. Good luck! ....

JDgreen et al,
I have the tractor at the shop and you are correct in that it is the bolt however they tell me that there is a new kit that replaces the old one and that the new kit is $600 and labor to install (2 days) is another $1200. that's crazy, but it looks like I am stuck...or am I...what do you think. thanks for your help. Scott ....

The "kit" is a better setup but you can put it back with the original setup as well. The improved version uses a new shaft that has a threaded end with a large nut and cotter pin instead of the 3/8" bolt. This is much stronger, but depending how much you use it and how hard you use it, it may not be neccasary. Most of our customers opt to put it back with the original style. This saves a lot on parts, but unfortunately, If they don't get lucky by fishing out the old washer and bolt head, you don't save alot of labor. We had one customer that decided to take his chances and leave the bolt and washer floating around. I don't recommend that because if they get picked up in the gears, it will cause major damage. I've never heard back from him though, so I assume it is still running. (that was a couple of years ago, but maybe he doesn't own it anymore) Basically, If you are not a commercial operator, I feel the improved kit is not neccasary, but you have to make your own decision. I hope I didn't confuse you. ....

JDGREEN nailed it, thanks so much. I have it torn down and found the bolt sheered off and the head trying to get out to the back filtered area. The clever little buggers at JD didn't make the hole big enough for the sheer bolt head to get through so I must keep tearing it down till I get it. The aluminum washer thought was nicely eaten to shreds just small enough for some to get through the screen filter for the hydraulics.
Thanks again for this site and JDGREEN. ....

jdgreen, first what great details.
Is it possible to use a higher grade bolt than what JD used and help some by doing so? Then maybe they used the highest grade.

Update, I found the washer witch is about 3/16" thick and about 2" diameter, that came out with my telescoping magnet. I couldn't reach the bolt so I ventured to Tractor supply and bought a (PrecisionCraft) a division of STANLEY, bendable magnet and proceeded to fish away when the magnet came up missing. Now I have a magnet stuck to a bolt head stuck to a gear in my transmission...Thanks STANLEY. I don't recomend this tool. ....
