Wow, what a great resource this forum is! I have been out looking at a 1999 JD 4500 with 350 hours on it, power reverser 12/12 tranny, R4 tires, and a new JD FEL. I spun it around the lot and on the grass (to check for scuffing, etc) and asked the dealer about which axle it had. He said he would have to check, but would replace the axle if it was the old design, no charge. It seemed to run well, and the dealer gave me the name of the original owner. I called him and it turns out he trades in his tractor/equipment every 2 seasons (he's a landscaper} and he told me that he had not had any problems with the machine and had traded it in for a new 4500 just 3 weeks ago. The tractor would come with a 1 year warranty. Quote was $18K.Is this price reasonable? New from another dealer for same setup was around $21K.Comments? Thoughts? Suggestions?

For the extra $3000, I would go with the new one. I believe you would get 2 years of warranty instead of one and the peace of mind knowing the tractor hasn't been abused in a landscape business for 350 hours. Also, for $18k, you could get a new, smaller tractor equipped similarly. ....
