I have a Deere 870 Compact Tractor that has a fuel shutoff solenoid that is blowing fuses and running very hot (smoking actually). Should my first step be to replace the solenoid, or should I be looking somewhere else first?

Thanks.

Addendum - I should also mention that when the switch is turned on, the Solenoid is retracting properly, but when I energize the starter, the solenoid is bouncing back out, shutting off the fuel (keeping it from starting) and when the switch is returned to the normal running position, the solenoid moves back to the correct retracted position.

It sounds like you have a malfunctioning relay control module. Part number M803344. This control module applies voltage to a "pull-in" winding on the shut-off solenoid for a few seconds and then it is drops the voltage and there is only voltage to thr "hold-in" windings. If the pull-in windings are energized too long, the solenoid overheats like you mention. It could be the solenoid is already damaged if it has been run too long like this. ....

Is there any way to verify the correct functionality of the relay control module? Any idea how long it should be before the voltage drop kicks in? The wiring harness has 3 prongs. I assumed that there was a hot lead for each coil (hold-in and pull-in) and a common. Does the pull-in coil remain energized but at a lower voltage after some period of time, or does the relay module shut off the voltage to the pull-in coil? I have ordered a new solenoid as the other does appear to be damaged. I don't want to damage the new one also if it is the relay control module.

Addendum - I believe that I found the answer in one of your earlier posts regarding a 790 (see below). According to that post, the pull-in coil is energized for only one second. I will see if I can check this before I install the new solenoid. Thank you!!

You might try swapping in one of the other identical relay modules on the fuse/relay panel. If the problem goes away, you have just verified whether your original relay module is faulty. ....

I had the same problem with my 870 a few months ago. Replacing the solenoid did the trick. When it went, it was pretty spectacular. Lots of white smoke that smelled really bad and then the engine stopped as the solenoid gave out. As I remember, it was slightly difficult to get out but easily doable if you take your time and keep track of the samll pieces. ....

Well, it's not the Solenoid. It had stopped working completely and the new one does not work either. I removed the Control Module and it is toast, nice and black. I have now ordered a new Control Module and Fuel Shut-off Relay, but my concern is what is causing the problem. I don't know if it lies somewhere else or if this will take care of it. If you see a future commment on all caps, that probably indicates that I just burned up the new control module and/or solenoid (maybe I should just bend over and take it to the dealer for repair). ....

I think you will find your problem solved after replacing the module. It is not always clear what fails first, but you will have all new components, so you should be good to go. ....

I know this is an old discussion thread, but I'm having the exact same problem... 870 quit running with smoke coming out of the fuel shutoff solenoid. I replaced the solenoid, and when it still wouldn't start b/c the solenoid wouldn't pull in, I found the 5A fuse blown. I replaced the fuse, and the solenoid pulled in when I turned the key to run and then the tractor started fine. Machine ran for a minute or so and then died again. 5A fuse blown again. I swapped the pull in relay with the other one of the same type (neutral start?) and the same thing happened with a new fuse. So, with a new fuse, the solenoid pulls in, the machine starts, and then dies, with the solenoid too hot to touch and the fuse blows.

If the original poster replaced the relay control module in his/her fix, did that do the trick?

Thanks in advance for replies. ....

Interesting that the control module fixed your problem, wish I could say the same. After blowing fuses left and right, I gave up and had the dealer look at it.

they determined that the new solenoid I installed was defective from the factory and that the fusible link to the starter had blown. for the solenoid, I believe that it may have seen damage in all the debugging and testing I did, but I was happy to have them give me a new part for no charge. the fusible link was not something I would have known to check. anyway, for future reference, anyone reading this thread... both of these items are possible sources of trouble.

tractor is now fixed. :-) ....
