Can you with the standard wheels, either r1 or r4 widen the width of the tractor both front and rear? If so how and how many inches max?

On some tractors the rear wheels are two piece, center and rim, where the center bolts to the rim there sometimes is a zig zag square block piece of steel welded on the rim with the hole through it. See if you are mounted to the inside or out side of this bracket. If you are on the outside, move the center plate to the inside of the bracket. For the front wheels on some tractors you can take the left front, flip it and put it on the right front and the other on the other side. By turning the rims backwards they extend out further. I know this worked on my Kubota, don't know about JD but I think they are the same. If you are using a bucket, boxblade or other tools you might not want your tires wider then the tool. ....

My JDs have all had one piece wheels that are reversible, front and rear for 2 different front and rear spacings. My L-series Kubotas have all had 2-piece rear wheels for 4 different rear spacings, but one piece front wheels for potentially 2 different front spacings. The owner's manual says don't reverse the fronts, however. Doesn't say why. ....

If your front end is also driven i.e. 4x4, the offset really messes with the drivetrain geometry, not to mention wreaking havoc on the wheel bearings and knuckle bearings as the leverage is further out from design-position. The forces on the u-joints are also increased. Another thing that is affected is what is called the "Ackerman steering" theory of design which is the radius one front wheel follows through a turn (eg. the inside-turning wheel is more sharpley turned than the outside, however they both follow a common point which is the center of the turning radius. Also, in the four-wheel-drive offroad world this is referred to as "wheel jacking"--this is where in four-wheel-drive the more torque that is applied to the wheel the more the wheel wants to naturally straighten, but driver input wants to turn causing the u-joint to bind and send the wheel back under the vehicle. On a 2-wheel-drive the forces are there but not as noticable as there is no torque input to the wheel itself. ....

I have the R-4's on my 4410 and reversing the rims is the only way to gain any added wheel width. Doing so gives you maybe an extra 1/2" of width. Not worth the effort in my opinion. Very poor design. I have also found that the R-4's are near worthless in the recent snow we had. Chains are the only traction answer. It sure would be nice to have an adjustable width wheel. ....

Interesting that the 4310 gains only a few inches of width (track) with wheels at their widest setting. The R4 wheels must have different offset from the R1s that I have. My JD955 benefits by maybe 10-12" rear and 6-8" front. On hillsides around here, the widest track is always recommended.
The only reason I can figure Kubota does not recommend widening the front is because of the mounting face of the front wheel. The wider track does cause more stress on the wheel and steering mechanism, but there are no U-joints in any of the 4WD CUTs I have or have seen. And most have power steering. ....

sorry to argue but I'm sure much more than a 1/2 inch would be gained by reversing the wheels 1/2 inch is not much, and also don't see how this is a "poor design"....if the engineers don't WANT the track to be too wide or narrow for various reasons, I would say it is very WELL designed so that if some joker desided to reverse the wheels (either way), it would still be where they consider safe. ....

Check out kwschumm pics 10 and 11. Ken got considerable extra width by changing wheels when he went from R4s to R1s. ....
