I have a JM-180 with hi/lo and additinal
crawler hi/lo. When brush hogging I seem to
be only able to use 1st gear. 2nd has me
ripping around the field and going too fast
around turns.
Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong?

Sounds like you've got the range selector in Hi. I generally found H2 and H3 only good for travel - not for any meaningful work. You might wanna try L3.
I had more power of course with my JM254s, but switched between two gear combos depending upon terrain.
Hillside
Creeper H
Range L
Tranny 3
Flatland
Creeper H
Range H
Tranny 1
