I have very slowly been adding a couple of LED bulbs to my house, starting by changing out the highest usage locations first.

So last week I got a dimmable floor lamp from Ikea and bought one of their 600 lumen bulbs. No hum with this bulb, but 600 lumens is just not powerful enough for my office. Not to be thwarted I went to Lowes and bought an Ultratech by Feit Electric bulb rated at 1600 lumens for $34 each, light temperature 3000k.

Finally the light about is pretty good, but I have gone from $10/Ikea LED bulb to $34/each. And sadly now the bulb has hum that sounds light a fluorescent bulb.

At first I thought it might be the in cord dimmer but it still hums in a regular fixture.

I will return the bulb today... who said buying the latest technology is easy, it is tough work saving energy...

Buying latest technology for me has often proven to a waste of money. Seems one or two generation old is better buy again for me. I spent some time this week looking at options in cell phones and am about to decide sure do miss a simple phone that only makes calls.

Dennis it is my impression and understanding it is transformers that hum and not the fluorescent bulbs. On the high sodium outdoor lights not sure on all but many of them also have transformers which is normally their hum source.

I am going to guess there is a small transformer in the light you have here. Funny was looking at them in lowes yesterday afternoon. Bought compact fluorescent again. That bulb is easy large enough to have a transformer built in as the compact screw in fluorescent do. If there is a hum in a transformer not aware of any way to remove it but might be indication of voltage being my guess is low or in fluorescent maybe a fixture that needs to be mounted more secure.

Then there is the real possibility,,,you just have a bulb that has issue and needs to be replaced. kt

Hi Ken,

I have swapped in other LED Bulbs and LED floods in the fixture and none of them hum and all of the bulbs come from Feit Electric (Lowes Ultratech). The bulb that hums is the most powerful I have seen so maybe that has something to do with it or as you say just a bad one that I have. I need to have the floor lamp close to my desk, otherwise it would not be so bad, but for the money I just want lots of light and no noise :)

I am definitely returning it. I put a daylight LED flood 800 lumens in for now, but a floor lamp should have a bulb so that light radiates a bit.... ....

Dennis,
I have been purchasing my LED lights from T-Mart which seems like they are the lowest in price and I have yet to have any issues with their LED's. I have a John Deere 318 that I replaced the LED and now I can actually see without burning up my light cover and running my battery down. I also replaced several lights in my house and they are a really nice light. I believe T-Mart get their lights from overseas where they are required in a few countries so they have the bugs worked out of the bulbs already. Just my 2 cents... ....

Thanks Izera!

Yup it does not matter whether its GE, Sylvannia, Phillips, or private label etc. they all seem to be made in China :)

Right now I am just trying to find a brand that works so I can order online to save bucks if and when I buy more, only replacing the lights that are on constantly at home first. ....

I returned the humming bulb and got a Par38 Daylight Flood LED 1400 lumens 120 watt equivalent uses 23 watts. Same outfit Feit Ultratech. The 5000k light for my office is much better for my office than the 1600 lumen 2700k temperature that I returned. With this light I do not need the desk lamp or the bookcase lights I have. And no noise and very little heat, the other one that hummed was quite hot... ....

And heat is a sign of wasted energy in lights. Energy that is producing the heat is not producing lighting. That is of course part of the issue with some sources of lights. Thanks for the info Dennis.
