I building a pole barn. I am using pt post 9' on center. Double 2x10s for girders on the posts. I will be using 2X10 18 dss grade lumber for ceiling joist tied to the double 2x10s with joist hangers as I want there to be storage above. I was thinking of notching the posts 1 1/2 inch to rest the beam on then bolt with carrige bolts. Only half the beam will be on the notch, the other half will be flush with the wall girts. I will have 3 foot of post above the beam remaining. I was planning on using the remaining post to put double girders on for the roof rafters creating a knee wall. Will a 1 1/2 inch notch below this cause any problems. (monitor type building) Any suggestions would be appreciated. I live in southeast texas and snow loading is not an issue.

Best I can offer is an opinion but even then don't see what size post these are you are wanting to notch 1 1/2 deep. Okay no snow load there but how about wind load? That is our big concern here in South Carolina. Then there was the large commerical metal building built that would take like 10 inche of snow load and just a few weeks later we had a whole like 16 inches (a lot for us) and the full roof fell in. ....
