Hi, I found a 1996 Cub Cadet 7275 which is as I understand it the same as the Case IH 1140. It has a back hoe, FEL and a rebuilt engine as of 9 years ago. The hydrostatic pumps are bad according to the seller. They were tested at a hydraulic place and they claimed they were junk and would need a $7k new pump. He wants $3500. Is this something that is fixable without spending an arm and a leg? I can't seem to locate much info on the pumps and the interchange of what other tractors might have the same pumps.
Thanks for any info you might be able to provide. Isaac.S

Ask him the name of the shop that tested them and permission to talk with them. Often some of such a conversation gets lost.

I talked to the shop to find out what the scoop was. It has two pumps. A Shimadzu and a Kayaba. Both are just plain worn out. The side plates are worn through, gear housing is worn, gear set is worn, thrust plate is worn through. This tractor must have just seen too much work. Ideally a Mihandra or generic HST unit could be dropped into the tractor. Is that feasible or are the parts pretty specific. It looks like Kabota uses Kayaba pumps.

The good news? There's only a handful of companies that make those components.
The bad news? All the OEM tractor makers put the same clause in their purchase contracts. They can't sell to anyone except at the OEM companies full retail price.
In most cases, Ralph Nader was right, the parts outstrip the cost of the whole machine in no time.
We had this discussion a while back about wheels. Someone was looking for new rims for a Kubota, cheapest price they could find was about 3 times the price of a rim for any typical North American tractor.
Now it's possible to find something similar in a wrecking yard and swap the parts, but IMHO, unless you count your time as being worth $0/hr, its still not worth it.
Best of luck. ....

I am not a pro here at all but if the pumps are that worn hard to believe the tractor does not have other parts worn heavy also. It sounds like it may be a money pit.

Yes, he also had the engine rebuilt 9 years ago. I think he just worked the thing to death. It includes n FEL and backhoe and could be parted out but I think I'll steer clear of it. I don't need a money pit, already have several :P
