I am interested in buying a new big toy... A JD 4100 Compact Tractor. I recently found a tractor for sale on Ebay which indicated a buy price of $9795. WOW! ??? That is not a bid price. The tractor is a 2001 Hydro model brand new with factory warranty. It is being sold, like many others in recent days by a dealer in Lawerenceville Georgia. They will ship or you can pick up. What is the deal? My JD dealer wants $12500 after the $1000 credit from the factory. No taxes on the net, so you save over $3000. Anyone else seen this? Seems to good to be true.

I would suspect that the JD employees have a discount and are selling the tractors on the net. It maybe through a dealer. I can not see this lasting. JD will catch on. ....

I just went to eBay and looked. It is a gear trans model, with no mower, FEL, etc. So it doesn't look like a big bargain yet. My impression was that the MSRP of a 4100 gear was under 10K.

Sorry, wrong listing. Same tractor and comments, though.

My mistake. You are correct Don, there are actually two listings for JD 4100 Compact Tractors. One will become an auction soon and has the buy price of $9795 (gearshift), the other is an auction that ends today on a hydro model. No way do I want a gear model.

What should I expect to pay for a 2001 Hydro model? The local dealer (Wisconsin) quoted a price of $13500 with turf tires. He stated that John Deere was running a promotion for $1000 off the tractor and $150 off each attachement when purchased as a package. Intially I would like the to purchase the loader, box blade, and front blade. I will be plowing snow, and I figure the front blade will work better than the loader. The dealer quoted

$13500 Tractor
$2750 Loader
$500 Box Blade
$500 Front Blade
$17250 - $1450(promotion) = $15800 plus tax

....

Seems a bit high compared to the prices at [http://www.jdlawns.com/4100.htm] which is a handy reference. Where is WI are you? Have you tried the dealers in Dodgeville or Janesville? When I got my 4300, I found they had the best prices in SW WI. Janesville was a couple hundred higher. I have a King Cutter box blade and think I paid about $260 - it works. ....

Better look again. They are both gear models.

Some one wrote to me in another discussion that all the 4100 are now hydro. Is this just clearance of old stock? Having never looked at the 4100 series thinking it too light I assumed it was like the rest of the 4000 line with gear and hyro offered. If only hydros are offered you may end up with an odd ball machine.

Don...Correct Again.

Look close is an understatement. I am new to buying compact tractors, is "hydrostatic power steering" an optional item on the 4100 or did they just put hydrostatic under the word transmission in the description to confuse me. I am guessing the later. ....

Also be aware that the turf tires jack up the price a considerable amount. As I remember maybe $1200.00 or so. A unique feature of the 4100 (if purchased with cheaper stock ag tires) is that you can go to a local tire store and buy all season tires meant for cars and trucks and get performance similar to turfs for a fraction of the price. ....

I don't think the steering is an option. Whether they did it on purpose, who knows I guess. Good luck in your search.

Wi Doug: I am located in New London, Wisconsin. Thanks for the link to the Lawn and Leisure site, it was very helpful.

I believe the local dealer gave me appropriate pricing. $13500 for 4100 - Hydro Trans - Valve Selector - Turf Tires
$2700 for the 410 loader. $500 for a 5' box blade, although he recommended the 4' He indicated Deere was giving $1000 off the tractor and $150 off each implement when purchased as a group. Based on the Lawn and Leisure site it could be combination of dealer and mfr incentives.

I found a used 4200 that has caught my eye. 4200 with Hydro Trans @140 hours. The dealer is asking $11900.
I am concerned that the 4100 will not have a large enough loader capacity. There seems to be a large swing between the 410 and 420 loader. Something like 500 pounds. That could be the difference for me. ....
