I'm buying a TC29 soon and wonder if I should get a block heater installed? I plan to move snow as needed. I live on a farm in central Illinois and sometimes the drifts are more than I can scoop by hand. Will this tractor start reliably at temperatures between 10 below and 20 above without a block heater? I've never owned a diesel before. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

I'd highly recommend a block heater. It is very hard on the tractor when starting that cold. I have a JD2030 that will start at -10 with ether, but I plug it in when it gets below 30. It starts so much easier. It is a lot easier on the starter & the oil flows a lot better. Cold starting is hard on engines. It only takes 15-30 minutes. ....

the tractor you mentioned definitly needs a block heater to start in that temperature range. The differance between gas and diesel engines in starting and as simply as I can say it is the gas engine has spark plugs to ignite the fuel. Adiesel engine does it by compression and explosion of fuel, the explosion gives heat which in turn makes it more efficient as it gets to operating temperature, and of coarse creates less smoke. I've had two in trade last year and you do need the heat. If you wish to keep it in your attached garage than by all means get it with a heater. you won't regret it. A little cold wheather advice from upstate N.Y. ....

Larry,I don't have experience with the unit you mentioned, or live in Il, but think it could be well worth the little extra money. I asked the same question when purchasing our 4100, and decided to go with it. Like insurance, hopefully you never need it, but it will almost pay for itself the first time you do. ....

Our 1925 Boomer started at 0 degrees without heat. I was surprised. Yet I still waited some time for warmup. The block heater is nice. Another cheaper option is to use a dipstick heater.Dennis ....

Larry:As the owner/operator of a fleet of compacts doing snow removal as well as summer maintenance, yes, you should use a heater. I have found a couple of slick little items at the auto parts places that makes a big differtence with cold weather starting of any small engine. First is an electric blanket for your battery, you lose a LOT of the battery's capacity as temp. drops, crank long enough and you can seriously affect battery life expectancy. Second is a magnetic heater, stick it to the oil pan for an hour or two prior to use and in conjunction with a block heater, our Kubota L3450's can be kept at almost running temp. just by being plugged in. Best of luck.Ted. ....

Thanks Ted. I'll check out both items next time I'm in Peoria. I hope we don't get much snow this season but I'll be ready for it after all those years of scooping.I live on a farm and have a 50 yd drive with an "L" curve in it. It drifts in two different spots. Thanks again.Larry ....

Larry, I live in Michigan. Get the block heater if you want to protect your investement.(sorry I'm behind in my replys - had some work to do). Yes it will probably start without one but it is - as the other man said - a cheap ins. policy. You give your wife a warm place to sleep don't you ? We need to take the same care of our tractors. ....
