 540 PTO Won 039t disengage

I have B2400 4WD that will not disengage the 540 PTO. The shifter is in the disengage position. When I try to pull it to engage it fells like it hitting something solid and it will not move. I have looked at it and removed the retaining pins that hold the linkage to the shaft that goes into the transmission, thinking that it was out of position and tried to move it by hand but it will not move. Does anyone what has happen. When this occurred I was brushhogging my pasture and when I went to disengage the shifter by moving it to the disengage position and it move to the disengagment position but the PTO was still turning my brushhog. Any help or ideals will be helpfull especially the cost for repairs if I have to take it in. For more spec's on my tractor it is 4WD, hydro trans and it has the mid pto.

Harold, I think I can shed a little light on your problem, although I am sorry but it won't be good news. It sounds remarkably like what happened to nieghbours machine, basically the gear which slides to engage/disengage the pto slipped out of the shift fork and into the engage position. The mechanic at the dealer said it was a fairly commmon problem on some models. The pto shifter had worn or bent (or both) from many shifts over the years, allowing the fork to return to the neutral position without the mating gear. The thing you are 'bumping' into when trying to go back to the engage position is the gear that should be trapped in the shift fork. If this is the problem the fix is to disassemble the transmission and replace the worn items and re-assemble, not fun or cheap. I hope I'm wrong but it sure sounds like it. Best of luck.
