 15 yr old hoses

OK, I have finally got the time to rebuild my JD 7 backhoe control valves - thanks to all for their input. My next question is this - the unit is 15 years old. I bought it used and the hoses "look" ok except for corrosion at the connectors. Should I bite the bullet and replace all of the hoses or should I just brush down the connectors and paint them? Also, is there a less expensive alternative than buying the hoses from JD? I was contemplating getting stock length hoses from Northern and just dealing with the extra loop. Is this a good idea? Also, hoses on the 7 are 1/4" ID and the hoses from Northern would be 3/8" (same 3/8 NPT connectors). I am sure the larger hose wouldn't cause a hydraulic problem, but would there be a mechanical one for clearance where they route throught the unit? Thanks for the continued advice!!

If your are repainting the whole unit I would replace hoses otherwise just check all of them carefully. Also if you do replace, stay with same size. Some auto parts stores like NAPA make hoses to your exact length.

Norm I wouldn't switch the size of the hoses as it will effect the performance of the unit. Most all dealers will be able to build hoses for you if you need to replace them. I wouldn't worry about them unless they are chaffed or show cuts on them.

It might be worthwhile to ask around to see who makes hoses in your area. Prices for new hoses hose vary widely. One local hydraulic repair shop will build hoses to any length and diameter for quite a bit less than the price of the dealers replacement hoses. Another shop wants twice the price. If the hose is real bad, I bring it in and they match it exactly. Sometimes they can reuse part of the existing fittings and then the price is even less. If I have the hoses off, I just drop them off in the morning and pick up the new ones on my way home from work.

I should point out that nicks, cuts, and cracks in the outer weather cover of the hoses doesn't seem to affect how the hose works. Sometimes I replace them just because I like the look and feel of new flexible hoses, but I've got some hydraulic high pressure hoses that are so old that you can see the wire braid in areas and they work just fine.
