If that happened at night it would make some sense.

Thanks Michael for your in-depth analysis. It makes a lot of sense now and explains why the Toyota has such poor reception. I agree that if an antenna booster solves the problem that's the way to go.

I stopped by an audio place today to look at car stereos. Boy they sure are ugly these days. Most of them have huge blue flourescent or color lcd displays that visually show some sort of dynamic reverb show. Who wants to watch a moving radio display? All the aftermarket manufacturers have adapters to fit 1, 1.5 or 2 DIN enclosures. They really are sophisticated, the dealer had a computer program where you select a radio and your car model and the program would display what it would look like in the dash with the required adapter.

Our highlander has the base model radio and not a lot of in-cabin electronics (no navigation system, no dvd, etc) so hopefully the radio doesn't do anything but play audio.

Thanks for all the good info fellas!

With respect to WLS...
Propagation of the signal is better at night as Mark said. Also these stations use large arrays of antennas designed to shape their transmission pattern. I don't know specifically, but WLS probably shapes their pattern to the east or maybe E/W.

When I was growing up in Missouri, we could hear the Little Rock station better than WLS. Later I moved to Kankakee and WLS was very strong there.

Yep I know all about skip. I used to operate a Sideband CB and shoot skip across the ionosphere, sometime even reaching australia if I was in the right spot. The thing is, in my house my kids clock radio in his room in the basement can pick up WLS better than my truck can. I believe their tower is somewhere near I80. They pump out 50,000 watts as well. In my Vic I have no problems getting them except when I drive past this one hospital everyday where the 3 phase overhead power lines drown out AM totally. I recall driving to PA last month and recieving WLS all the way across Indiana and a small part of Ohio on a Sunday morning. Could not do that with the F350 though.

I can't follow all the sophisticated analysis of AM, FM sensitivities here. But I agree with Ken - the new radios are all pumped up with displays, flourescents for the kids. My son put a new radio in his (my) 1997 Honda Accord that he always leaves at blasting volume. When I go to move the car in the driveway the volume almost kills me - in fits of anger I begin pushing all the buttons to shut it off but haven't managed managed to shut it off yet!Smile

I don't know how many of you have been working to get stereo through many areas of your home. We keep adding more and more sets of speakers. I finally had to route my first Onkyo receiever into a second Onkyo receiver for the outdoor speakers. I have also attached a set of wireless speakers to the second receiver. The system worked great this year.

Still working on the Highlander radio problem. It's been delayed because three weeks after buying it my wife backed it into a parking garage concrete wall and it's been in the body shop. Yeesh. We picked it up yesterday and I have an antenna amplifier to try out this weekend. I need to make sure the antenna is properly grounded as well.

ncrunch, when we built our house I prewired in-wall and ceiling speakers in all the rooms and on the deck. We have a Xantech distribution amp that can take six sources and route them to 10 sets of speakers. Unfortunately I haven't gotten around to hooking it all up So Sad
