Don't understand why my starter suddenly does not make contact with the flywheel . I have a shibarua SD1643 3 CYL Diesel engine .Same starter just had it rebuilt and it works great when I test it. But when I install it then it just spins in there and does not make contact with flywheel.Same sprocket with 9 teeth , flywheel looks real good and turns with no problem.motor turns over with flywheel just fine. Before I pulled the starter it off I thougth something wasn't right about it so I had it rebuilt but now its doing the same thing it was before I pulled it off, so big waste of time having it rebuilt but live a learn. I tryed to push the starter in towards the motor so it would be closer to the flywheel but does nothing. Im thinkin I need a larger starter sprocket. But that don't make scence because it worked before.

Im really stumped????

Please help
Thank you
Mike

Mike no idea the design of the starter but some thoughts: did they replace the benix or at least inspect it when it was rebuilt?
But if your battery is weak or not getting full power to the starter it might be enough to spin the starter but not enough to spin it fast enough to engage the bendix.

You could have weak battery or correded cables preventing full power to the starter. Or there could be a problem with the bendix itself. ....

So you have tried it off of the tractor to see the bendix kick out with the starter spinning.

Let me backup a little. On the tractor it sounds like it is spinning fine just not engaging. To me the check list is: It is not spinning fast enough to engage the bendix. What could cause that, not sufficient power to the starter or bad starter. But it test good on bench so that to me leaves only not enough power to starter when you install it. Jumping to the battery still uses the tractor's wiring system and there is no testing of it. Yes you could have a battery cable that is not making full contract and only letting some of the power through it. Been there and done that recently. Quick test, run jumper cables direclty to starter on tractor and see how that works...big safety notice...this is very dangerous and tractor can and will crank in grear as you are bypassing safety switches.

Second, bad bendix. Okay you have a new one on there so not likely two in row are bad but possible. But you have seen it work on bench, so my guess not it.

Third, something is wrong with the teeth on the flywheel To me worst possible case. I am assuming this is manual transmission tractor, if so with tractor in gear (high gear so eastier) pull or push it so the flywheel rotates some and try it. If it now engages probably some bad teeth on the fly wheel.
Some flywheels have a band around them for the teeth. If your's is like that guess possible that band has slipped backward and away from the starter causing the problem. If that has happened would doubt it did all the way around so again rotating the flywheel might help find that. If you get to test the flywheel suggest you pull the starter off and with good light and mirror if need be look carefully at flywheel and the teeth.

Hope it is bad battery cable connection. ....

Yes and another yes to your first 2 questions Im going to look closer at all your suggestions.
Thank you for helping.
This is very frustrating cause I have been trying to fix this for the last mouth, don't like my tractor to sit to long without running it. I enjoy doing work with it not to it, and don't want it to become yard art as they say in this part of the county.
Have a great day !
thx

Mike, did laugh at "Yard Art". One of the funniest things I have ever seen was a neighbor who had a riding mower before most did and it was parked in the corner of his yard and was mowed around for a couple of years.

What is going to hopefully happen is you realize something very simple has happen and just missing it.

So back to: your bendix is design to engage only from the spinning of the starter and there is NOT an electrical soleniod on the started to push the gearing is there?

Second, since you can turn the engine using the flywheel it seems you are reaching it by hand or tool, it is not loose is it?

Third, by chance could the bolt holes on the engine or the starter be worn or loose enough to allow the starter to rotate away from the flywheel or to tip away for it? And this is one if true will surprise me, there is a bolt hole you should be using but there is an extra hole there you are using. You do have all mounting bolts installed?

Last, if you have it rebuilt they should have also looked for any crackes in it that would have allowed it to move when loading from engaging.

You may has stated this and I missed it, when you hit the key for the starter and it begins to spin, you are sure it continues to spin and is not stalling when the teeth are engage? ....

One other thought, have you checked to be sure the bendix are not slipping on the starter itself? Are you sure what ever is suppose to keep it from turning is holding?

Look carefully for signs of something having cracked or broken off so not to notice it is damaged. A missing tooth or latching paw or such might be harder to notice than a damage one. ....

To use it in the meantime you should be able to pull- or push-start. Then, if you have a hill, park it at the top and roll-start. ....

Thats funny The grass around it musta been growing out the motor." LOL " Yes there is a solenoid / works good to. It pops out about 3 quarters of an inch and spins and if you hold the key on it will continue to spin in the poped out position just like it should, yet its not turning over the motor. Secondly reaching in the hole where the starter goes you can see the flywheel and turn it with a flat head screwdriver moving the motor over at the same time . so all is intact there. flywheel is about 1" wide very heavy duty. You can still see slite wear makes on the flywheel where the starter teeth fit together with it. Thirdly There is a protruding ring on the end of the starter where it goes into the bellhousing so you CANNOT incorrectly install the starter. only 2 bolt holes top a bottom. Once installed it will rotate about 1 eight of an inch. bolt holes are not warn there just right for slipping nuts and bolts in. No cracks I can see. Im not sure about it stalling but it sounds just like it does when testing outside the tractor. Im going to look at all your advise and then let you know. Thank you for your help very much appreacated. I did try pull starting but just once then quit. it didnt start. may try once more if I don't get any where here.
Thx

I thought about what you said about stalling and thought I would test the starter one other way. May sound crazy but Im out of options. I have seen starters do that before. So I put it in a vise wired it up to the battery and grabed ahold of the bendix with a chanlocks and said what the hell see what happens. Well it poped out a bit but I wasn't even holding the bendix very hard and what do you know, it wasn't spinning. It was slipping on the end where it engages the flywheel.( THATS IT ) Im calling that MOTHERF'ER that SAID he fixed my starter now to see what he says. Well I told him how I tested it and he said it should have ripped the chanlocks of or tare up the bendix holding it. He said it seemed to work good when I gave it back to you but then said he didn't even test it before it left his shop. He did say bring it back and he will fix it on monday. So I think we found the problem. I guess thats what you get for a F'king barn yard starter specialist. He said he didn't rebuild it because it only needed a new drive unit put on it. Also said it must of been a failty unit. "Thats bull" he didn't fix it plane a simple. I guess I have to look at the brite side of things, I got a new battery plus cables and Im good at changing out the starter " LOL " ( and a new Friend ) I don't think I would have gotten to the problem so quickly without your suggestions Kthompson Thank you ! Thank you ! So we will see how this turn out Tuesday after Installing it. But I will be back on TP soon. There are some other issues to fix after getting it started . Hav'nt started it now for 3 months. I sure like this tractor because its like a little bulldozer and has meaty tires and only cost me $2500 Got it from an old man that used it a few years on his ranch then parked it so only has 1100 hours. I think its a early 80's model but not so sure. I have had a FORD and JOHN DEER before this. There great tractors but the Shibarua"s a compact .yet still good size Its 20hp. Anyhow gotta go , see ya soon.
Have a great day !
Thx Mike ....
