 Gray Market Compacts

I'm thinking of buying one of the gray market used compact import tractors from SE Asia, but how can I solve the use limitations? Where are belly mowers available? It seems the wheel base of most is too short for a belly mower and there's no mid-pto. Additionally, the rice lug tires would really tear up lawn turf. If i try to replace them, turf tires would require new rims - if rims to fit could be found. Wouldn't I loose my original cost advantage in buying tires and rims? Where are loaders available? As these tractors were designed for rice paddy use, is the structure of the tractor strong enough to handle a loader? Many come with a roto-tiller attached, but will this tiller work in our US soils? What about tractor parts availability? Who carries parts? Do these imports with all sorts of far eastern names have close cousins that were marketed in the US under names we recognize? Of course there's Deere-Yanmar, Ford-Shibaura and a Kubota is a Kubota but what about the others? Any insight or experience would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't recommend one of the tractors from S.E.Asia. They are the poorest quality tractors that were available in Japan. You are better off buying a high quality tractor to start with.I import mainly A grade tractor & sell very few parts for the tractors that I have imported. I have belly mowers that will fit many of the tractors. If you buy certain models , there will be turf tires available for the rims on the tractor. Most models can have loaders mounted on them. Some models can handle a loader better than others. The tillers will work great in US soils. I have parts available . Some models have better parts availability than others. Most brands made tractors for the US market. Feel free to contact me for parts , attachments , or a high quality tractor.

So, Leonard, considering my desire to put a belly mower and loader on the tractor, and of course the desire to have decent parts availibility, what make and model of gray market import would you recommend? I want to stay with a three or four cylinder engine and front wheel drive.

There are quite a few models that would fit your specs. First how much mowing & loader work are you going to do? How fast do you want to get it done? What is your budget?

Just going to use it to puts around on a little 3 acre site. Will do a small garden plot of rototilling. Mostly finish mowing, but some landscape work to be done with the loader too. Mostly light stuff, but some rock moving too. I won't use the loader much per year. I attended an auction lately where it appeared that I should be able to get a pretty decent used front wheel drive Japanese tractor, maybe wilh tiller, for $2500 to $3000. But, again, considering mower, loader and parts availability, along with quality of the tractor, from your experience, what brand(S) would you recommend?

If you only have 3 acres, I don't think you need a 12 to 15-K tractor. I just bought a Chinese tractor for 15 acres and its doing fine. I'm not doing much with it except for moving wood, scaping the road and mowing. I saved over 5-K on a 38 hp tractor. If I was running a farm, maybe I consider spending the extra cash. check out these site: http://www.ccequip.com/taskmaster.htm or http://www.tractors-etc.com/tasmastmuttr.html. These are the ones I've deat with but there are a number of improved (americanized) chinese tractors out there.
