 TC29D TC33D Noise

I have been shopping, researching, and watching these post sites for a while and am itching to pull the trigger. I really like the New Hollands but the TC29D and 33D seem to start rough and the hydraulics "whine" and schreech when in use with the loader. The dealer i have been working with also sells Kubotas and is a bit biased towards the Kubota. He pointed out the flaws in the 29/33 and put me on the 35/40/45 machines. I loved the feel of the larger machines but the reality is it is TOO BIG for my needs. So I am leaning towards a JD 4310. Does anyone have any thoughts/experience on the NH 29/33 rough starting and hydro noise? Thanks in advance.

Don't know what you mean by rough starting, but they will appear as a gas engine out of tune in cold weather and billow black exhaust. That normally clears up abruptly, mine did. Most construction equipment I am familiar with display the same traits. There is much talk in the archives regarding the hydraulic noise in those machines. I changed to a different N/H oil when I performed the 50 hour maintenance and that eliminated the screeching in cold weather.

I have a 33D Bought it a year ago it has been flawless. In the cold it does start rough but I added a block heater about a month ago and it is fine. It starts fine in warmer weather. Hydrolic noise also is only in cold and goes away in a few minutes. I would highly recommend the 33D.

I bought a new TC24D last fall and it seemed to start rough with lots of black smoke. My old TC18 was much smoother. Well, I just found out that there is a timer on the glow plug that cuts it out after 5 seconds. Now I hold the glow plug on for 5 seconds, release the key, hold it again for 5 seconds, and sometimes a 3rd time if it's real cold. Now it starts nice and smooth!

The engineers must have had something in mind when they put in a 5-second cut-off on the glow plugs. They must have had great faith in the starting ability of the engines, because it's hard to see how 5 seconds of glow plugs would heat up much when they have to start out by heating up themselves.

Using the plugs several times makes sense to me because it takes my mid-80's Ford at least 30-seconds for the indicator to come on fully bright. Who knows, maybe the plugs are different, higher compression ratios are used in newer indirect injection engines, the starters turn at higher rpm's or less-metal used in the pre-combustion chambers--all sort of things that engineers would know about and I wouldn't.

Maybe 5-seconds should work, but I think I'd give the plugs another go if I was getting black exhaust at startup unless a manual or dealer says differently. There's probably no need to contaminate the oil by running an engine that's not ready to run if another shot of glow-plugs cures the problem.

Solved hydro whine on my 33 with Amsoil synthetic hydro fluid (any synthetic should do the trick). Always starts in cold w/o heater by the 3rd try max. Chugs a little but thats what diesels do! Go for the 33 & have fun

Holmes57, I have the TC29D yes it whines a bit (hydro pump) even worse when its cold like 25deg. range till the fluid heats up... As for the Rough starts not sure... I have 100 hours on mine. I keep it in the un-heated garadge and on the cold days I clutch it, let the glow plugs do there thing, then start... Let it run a but then let the cluth out. then they hydo-pump starts to whine... Back it into the drive and let it heat up for awhile... If you can swing the extra cash get the TC33D though.. Good luck
