Just bought a L3830 with a 723 loader and BH90 backhoe. My first day out, I dug half a dozen poplar stumps, filled the holes, etc, and I'm really pleased with this tractor and what it can do. I will eventually be clearing about an acre or so of mixed pine and 12 to 18 inch dia tulip poplars. My question in this - the loader is fine, but its lousy for picking up and moving logs, unless there's something I don't know...would a pallet loader be my best bet for doing this? Also, if anyone out there knows of some good online writeups of the best techniques for clearing trees, etc I'd really appreciate it. Any other tips on clearing welcome.

One of the best overall references that I have seen for methods is "Operating Techniques for Tractor Loader Backhoe" written by Gary Ober. It was published in 1983. Lots of photos and illustrations and explainatory text. It has part of one chapter devoted to clearing land. I got it through an interlibrary loan rather than buying a copy. However, I know that it can be purchased on-line at www.equiptrain.com/tlbbook.htm

A set of forks on your loader arms are a most useful tool. I wonder how I managed without them. I have hauled many tree trunks and railroad ties with mine.

One minor drawback.... I don't think you can use the forks to "set" the front end of the tractor for backhoe digging like you can with a down-turned bucket.

You might have to dig first and change gear to scoop up the logs.

Have you considered a grapple instead of loader forks? Kwschumm has a real nice grapple set up on his JD 4310 that he seems very satisfied with.

"Have you considered a grapple instead of loader forks? "

You can build a low cost alternative to the hydraulic grapple by buying a skid steer quick attach plate and making four grapple arms (see my pics 1,2,and 5). I built these exactly for piling logs after skidding them to a landing and they worked well for me. They will easily handle 24" diameters or under.

The advantage you have over forks is that you can nicely place logs in a pile instead of letting them roll off the forks. Plus you don't have to get underneith them, you just place the arms around the log, squeeze and lift. I had only about $200 and two evenings of work into the whole thing.
Dave

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I ordered the Gary Ober book, and will be looking into grapples or some quick change forks.
