what series model kubota do i need 5 acre multi-use

my wife and i live on 10 acres and cut about 5 acres (a full day on our current sears lawn tractor). it is rolling/hilly with some trees and outbuildings to manuver around. we garden in above ground planters so need a loader to move loose dirt. i need to (box)blade occasionly around the barn and garage as we complete construction and along the gravel drive. i have used several different tractors and like the kubota hst.
i need 4-wheel drive, a loader, box blade, mower (60 inch, i think) and modest size. i can think of several good reasons to have a backhoe but may never get one due to the cost. power steering would be nice.
i am so confused by all the series and models kubota offers. i have two questions: would a belly mower be better (are belly mowers more manuverable?) and what size/model would be best. i am looking for a tractor that can do these things without spending more than i have to, but i do not want to be cheap and buy less than i need. i plan/hope to buy used.
thank you,
jay

Jay, there are dealers in your part of the world who list Kubota BX22 (a tractor/loader/backhoe package)for $15.3K or thereabouts, the 60 inch mower deck would add a bit more. The backhoe comes off in less than five minutes and the three point hitch attach's in less time than that. There are some comprehensive specs on Kubota's web site.

thank you for the help. now, if i were to drop the backhoe, is there a tractor with FEL, MMM, 4x4 and three point hitch that is a better value particularly with good used availability?
thanks,
jay

Sounds like a MMM that is compatible with a loader is needed for that idea. Many combinations of MMM and loaders require the loader to be removed when the MMM is mounted. It would be very good to make sure that both can be used at the same time, especially if looking for a used tractor. A good used tractor might be found with a loader but no MMM and an approach might be to get the used tractor and a new MMM. It could easily happen that there is no MMM that is compatible with a loader that's already on a used tractor.

I keep thinking that the typical work around a 10-acre property might be able to use a bigger tractor than a BX. However, if mowing is the main work, then maybe not. BX's strut their stuff at finish mowing. MMM's are pretty expensive and going for a 3ph finish mower would cut the budget down a bit.

I think the maneuverability question gets mixed answers but I don't think there's much debate that MMM's give better finish mowing and especially if the ground isn't level. Most 3ph mowers have more trouble cutting grass to the same length when hills or bumps are present.

The thing about maneuverability is that a 3ph mower sticks out quite a way behind the rear wheels. When the tractor is steered one way, the mower goes the other. That means that the mower has to clear a building before the tractor is turned when working close. That tends to leave a lot of trimming. On the other hand, a 3ph mower can sweep under trees with low branches where a tractor with MMM can't be driven.

Good used compacts tend to be rare as hen's teeth in many places. Most of the manufacturers discussed here all make good machines. It might be a better idea to find a good used tractor and then figure how well you can adapt yourself to what ever tractor you find rather than look for a particular model that is already adapted to your needs.

Used tractors, as Tom has noted, are sort of a random thing. It isn't like going to the Toyota dealer and choosing a used Corolla.
Best new deal out there right now would be a BX1800, Kubota is apparently overstocked nationally on that model. It has enough power to mow and blow snow.
If you find a used tractor you can certainly post the specifics here and find some experience to help you make a buying decision.

CJ- After spending six months doing research on used tractors..( internet, want ads, talking to farmers, etc. ) I found a Kubota L2350 : 4 wheel drive, power steering, turf tires, ROPS, 500 hrs of use, at the local Kubota dealer for $6,500. This price included a six foot 3ph finish mower. I mow approx. seven acres of my 40. I agree with Tom, manuverability is kinda tricky. It just takes a little time getting used to the movement of the mower. I'm not fussy 'bout the finish on the grass, so there are some scalped spots. I've located a used FEL from a private party for $1500. Still not sure if it will fit my tractor, but my total investment would be $8000.

I originally thought that the BX series would be ideal for people with about 5 acres. I have a good freind that mows seven acres with his as well as maintains another seven acres. Yes, when it came time to cut some cherry tree's out of the wooded area he borrowed a larger Kubota from me to tow the logs out. He has just enjoyed useing the loader to clear the nearly 5' of snow that we have so far this season both from his business as well as home and tenent house. I think one would give you excellent life and years of enjoyment. It's small enough to fit most everywhere you might be going now but enough tractor to do the bulk of all work.
