 Re B7200 Charging Problem

Ok, here is an update on my charging problem. I took the alternator in to a shop to have it tested and they couldn't get any readings out of it (0). I put it back on the tractor and exposed the 2 leads coming off of it and started her up. I checked the 2 leads with a volt meter and I also got zero out of it. Then I decided to recheck what I was getting at the battery, and there I was only getting 12 volts. I then disconnected the battery and tested the leads and it again read zero. I am assuming that I need an alternator. Any other ideas?

 Re B7200 Charging Problem

It may be as simple as a voltage regulator. This may be inside the alternater.

In my past, I've had some bad luck with rebuilds,s ao we learned how to fix the simple stuff in our shop.

Most of the alternator problems we encounter are the voltage regulator malfunctions.

Maybe there is a shop in your area that can install a new reg. in your alternater, and have them install new bearings while it is apart. This should keep you going for quite a while.

If the shop tested it and got 0 volts and you tested it and got 0 volts, you can pretty assume the alternator is bad. Don't know how yours is constructed. Generally alternators have a diode circuit (usually 3 diodes I think) that converts the alternating current from the alternator into a direct current to the battery. On some of these you can replace the diodes. One or more bad diodes can prevent the alternator from working even though the alternator itself is still good. See if you can get to and test the diodes. If they test bad, see if you can get only the replacement diodes.

To get real technical it sounds like one or more of the diodes has crashed. The trouble is how long or where to go for a diode as you won't find them in the Kubota parts book or anyone elses that I know of. Years ago you could find that stuff but today you just replace the unit.

A repair manual should give the complete set of tests for both regulator and alternator. The problem really can't be diagnosed for certain without running the tests. However, the tests are pretty standard no matter what type vehicle, and it's tough to do anything other that assuming that a shop would know what it's doing. A general shop might miss a built-in regulator but 'the penny should drop' when somebody starts wondering how to connect their equipment.

I got curious and yes the parts manual for my Ford 1710 has a part number for the rectifier bridge but not for individual diodes. I don’t know if these things are generic diodes that could be found in cross-reference catalogues and ordered from an electronic parts supplier or if they’re proprietary modules such as Engine modules on Ford trucks.
